Running your own forum

Part of my new role at work involves running my own online forum. Don't worry it's not a competitor to Foxestalk (if only it was that interesting!) but I wondered if anyone on here has some advice on how to make a forum really popular, give great information and be really useful? If people who actually run their own forum could give me advice from their own experiences would be great. Also anyone who uses Foxestalk a lot because they think it's great can you tell me what makes it great that makes you come back time and again and want to contribute. All advice very much appreciated!

As a co-owner, and co-founder of the EMC Forum I wish you every success with your venture. Go for it!

My site isn't the most active these days (as some of here have noted), but enough folk still read it to make it worthwhile. It's also been a good way of extending my social circle.

Use the site to collect and share things that you find interesting — whether day-to-day events at City, a personal diary, or links to web sites you want to remember.

Once it's up and running, don't be shy about telling your friends about it, or bringing it to the attention of users of sites like this one. If it's good, you'll get plenty of new recruits, but even if there are issues, you may get feedback on how to sort them.

It's also important to set down ground rules at the start. You don't want the forum to be over-run by cyber-bullies, keyboard heroes or any other wind-up merchants who can't bear to read views other than their own. Remember that if anything illegal or defamatory is posted, you'll be the one to be held liable.

But don't let that put you off. 95% of forum users will be helpful. enthusiastic and friendly. And the more they are encouraged to take part in discussions, the more likely they'll be to visit the site on regular basis.

Give it a go - you will not regret it!

<!>

I am struggling to think of a more unpopular person/forum than Ultra/'s - and therefore someone less able to offer Foxed any advice whatsoever.

I can't.

I`d just spent a couple of hours going through some random forums and just nick little idea`s from the others lol. Whether its something simple like the colour of the pages or whether its easy on the eye (I must admit that after having a look at Talking Balls once that it looks quite amateurish compared to this forum and thats one of the reasons why I don't bother with that site), just aheva good look around and see what works.

My suggestion would be to make sure the categories are clearly devised so anyone can go on and know exactly what they are getting from each section instead of having to search to find out where they should post also.

Good Luck

Cheers for all the advice. Sorry for the late reply but running your own forum seems to take up a shed load of time! It's a food and drink website rather than a footie one (like I said, if only it were that interesting!) where people chat about what they'd like manufacturers to change about their products cos at the moment they keep taking the fat /bad things out of products cos they think that's what people want but I don't know about you but I'd rather they still made the full fat, full artificial etcs versions cos they taste better! It's a chance for people to say what they want and hopefully the manufacturers will listen!

Any more ideas now I've let you in on the topic?

I like food

I like the sound of wind blowing through tall trees and that of waves crashing on rocks.

www.Match.com have us down as being incompatible as a result...unless you also like the scent of fresias. They are my favourite.

Me and you DBBSmith. It could have been so good. It could have been forever.

Now it will never be.

Denied a lifetime of happiness by your love of fresias. You know they are only for the sordid and the unclean.

I'd love to put the link up but the registration process is 8uggered at the moment so it would be frustratingly annoying. It's quite a lonely place being on a forum all on your own... *t u m b l e w e e d*

How do I get people coming back time after time and adding it to their favourites? Foxestalk is on my favourites (*vain attempt at sucking up*)

Totally non topic related but just realised I've passed my 1 year anniversary of joining Foxestalk. Happy anniversary to me, happy anniversary to me, etc.

Interesting and diverse topics which are not necessarily to do with the main reason the forum exists.

And humour - God, you need to inject humour.

And don't let me in.
