Thracian Posted 26 October 2007 Posted 26 October 2007 Should any of you be thinking about somewhere special to take someone I can 100% recommend Stapleford Hall Hotel. Owned, I was told, by the Queen of Brunei, Stapleford was the chosen venue for the Sultan's son's annual birthday party when Michael Jackson was guest of honour and for Michael Carrick's wedding not to long ago, so you'd expect it to be good. But a stay there is something never to be forgotten. Our own choice of activities covered clay pigeon shooting, archery, falconry and golf followed by welcome relaxation in the swimming pool and jacuzzi. But the options were almost endless from the simplicity of complimentary cycling, swimming, and tennis to the arrangement of private jet hire and much in between! The food and wine throughout would have been a treat for anyone on Earth and the atmosphere, far from being stuffy, was entirely relaxed with every member of staff keen to do everything they could to ensure you had a happy time. Our bedroom looking out across the estate was all old fashioned elegance, but what made the stay so special were the endless thoughtful asides - a specially made anniversary cake from the pastry chef, congratulations cards from different sections of staff, courtesy of the course from the golf pro, welcoming bottle of sloe wine in the bedroom and so on. There's a website of course but if you're planning a trip and I can perhaps help by all means PM me. The venue is perfect for all kinds of one-off celebrations or for a company's extra-special staff day out. And it's on the doorstep for many, just a few miles from Melton Mowbray. Expensive? Depends what you choose to do and how you look at things. But worth saving up for whatever.
Milky Posted 26 October 2007 Posted 26 October 2007 My older brother is getting married there next August. Sounds promising!

Suffolk_fox Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 My brother got married there. Not a bad place. Also, a Man Utd player got hitched there this summer. Can't remember who, and can't be arsed to Google it.

Thracian Posted 28 October 2007 Author Posted 28 October 2007 my other half went for a spa day there a couple of months ago but didnt rate it much Not certain but we wandered over to the spa area and got the impression it was all a bit separate from the hotel-organised activities. It seemed very lonely despite all sorts of beauty treatments on offer. Anyway we decided however good the treatments were we'd called 30 years too late. We headed off for the pool and jacuzzi instead which is part of the hotel proper and was very agreeable towards dinner time when the odd mum and her screaming kids had disappeared. High powered pre-swim shower, towel robes and toiletries provided and a pool that was invigorating for being warm enough but not too hot - just the job! Perfection would have been an iced fruit cocktail flagon served by Happy Gilmore's girlfriend in a black basque by the jacuzzi, but the only drinks allowed had to be in plastic glasses - not quite the same though I'm quite sure the cocktail could be arranged.
