Sirloin Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 The issue is, who do you bring in? Bolton are being linked with Gary Cahill for 4 million today. FOUR fooking MILLION. For a reserve. 1.5 mill for either Mattock or Macauley is going to get you sod all. Better the "devil" you know.
Thracian Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 The back 4 are fine but we must be fair and say that Fulop made their record look better than it probably is because he at times saved us single-handedly.As for the individuals, whether people like them or not our two young full-backs have been recognized for Englands U21s and quite a few clubs are sniffing around for them and in time will become very good players. I think we ask a bit too much out of them, especially Mattock but they are good and will get better in a balanced team which Ollie looks like getting right. Kisnorbo has come on leaps and bounds from that ropey central midfielder that CL signed and despite his average distribution, is one of the better centre-halves at this level and McAuley is solid enough and at times is under-rated as he gets in so many blocks over the course of the game. For this level they are all OK and it has always been about the midfield and attack for me as we have got some good defenders. There was no Fulop against Coventry yet we still managed as comfortable a clean sheet as we're likely to get and that despite Coventry having considerable potential threat from the flanks. Even last season, pre-Fulop, the defence conceded only slightly more than a goal a game so to suggest we've had a one-man band in defence is totally wrong. Indeed, Kisnorbo, McAuley and even Stearman are renowed for their last ditch blocks and clearances. Yes, they've all dropped the odd clanger, but I've never had no reason to criticise their general resolve when defending - just their distribution.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 He was only included in the Eng squad because of massive Injuries...Thats a fact Stearman was in the squad too.. Thats a fact How does him being a local lad/his dad supporting leicester effect whether you would let him go for 1.5 mill? Explain to me why thats the case and why it has any relavence? Chelsea bound, are you joking? Well yes I am joking, he just simply isn't good enough to play at the best team in the country yet? Decent job in a crap side? His recent form has been shoddy Many people would agree with me here?! (that was written before the cov game) How can you even compared DJ and Mattock!? Well you can't, as they are diferent positions? So whats you point? I thought he already played for the best team in the country!

Well you can't, as they are diferent positions? So whats you point? I enclose the response I gave when what I considered to be fair comments, basically I was supporting the notion that Mattock is actually a valuable asset. This post was made pre the 7 figure offer, so not jumping on the band wagon. For some reason you chose to call my post ' a load of balls' , all about opinions but evidence seems to point to the fact that maybe I'm closer to being correct than you.? Disappoints me that some people 'get off' by slagging our decent players and are disappointed when we do well. ................................................................................ .................................................................... TG What a load of balls ????? TG He was only included in the Eng squad because of massive Injuries.. What does that change?? most players get their playing breaks due to injuries TG Stearman was in the squad too.. Yes, but did not appear in the side TG How does him being a local lad/his dad supporting leicester effect whether you would let him go for 1.5 mill? Just pointing out that, maybe having a player in the side that actually cares about who he plays for and not a money grabbing mercenary might be a bonus....wrong?? TG Chelsea bound, are you joking? You obviously know that he wasn't?? would hardly walk in to the first team but at 17 not a bad investment...watch this space[/b] TG Decent job in a crap side? His recent form has been shoddy Decent based on the surrounding standards, he's hardly going to look a world beater in our current side, a previous post said Gerrard would struggle in our side TG How can you even compared DJ and Mattock!? Easy, the question was 'would you accept £1.5milion for Mattock', I was using the price paid for DJ as a guide. History..Chesham United, Stevenage Borough, Billericay Town and Yeading. Bentford £5k, 9 goals in 43 for Brum, 27 yeas old, should of happened by now. Not slagging him, but would you swap...possibly yes!? Can't you give the lad a break?? seems as though you resent what he is trying to acheive? Bizarre

I didnt say we were a one man band at all, simply that Fulop made our record look very good with some show stopping saves. We are yet to see how good the current loanee is but you must admit that Fulop made some saves that many keepers wouldnt have managed, thus giving us a better record?
Lillehamring Posted 15 January 2008 Posted 15 January 2008 well, i have just watched the highlights, trying to work out why stearman is the devil incarnate based almost solely on playing some long balls and THAT mix up in the defence, and to be honest i don't think it was stearmans fault at all... 1. he slows up when he can see alnwick coming out... a normal repsonse. 2. he actually manages, despite stumbling over the keeper, to get back to cover the goal giving adebola only the slimest of angles, not the 'gaping open goal' people have suggested... i've watched it a few times, and i think that he did all that should be expected of him. to justify rating him a four and suggesting he be dropped on the strength of that is laughable...

Tbh I don't remember Fulop making any great saves (admittedly I haven't been to many away games), he used to come out well for crosses and he commanded his area, but he wasn't tested that often.
