The Reverend Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 Difficult question. They are both brilliant players, but i think Gerrard is superior at this moment. I think he does most things better than Fabregas at the minute- passing, tackling, shooting and has a better engine. And one other thing, Gerrard is an inspirational captain, and leader. I dont think Fabregas will ever be those things. They are both tenacious players, but i know who i'd rather go into a 50/50 with. Another thing is Fabregas's small stature. At under 5'10', he'll never be and never really has been good in the air, which is, as many people disregard, an important aspect of a midfield battle. But Fabregas has one quality that is better than Gerrards - and thats his ability to SEE a pass. Gerrard could hit a penny from 30 yards, but could he thread a ball through the eye of a needle, with such intelligence, like Fabregas does? Perhaps, but he can do it when he see's the movement, not BEFORE, which is why Fabregas is so effective at these clever little balls. In my opinion, it just shows how good Fabregas is though. We are comparing him to a player that is not going to improve greatly now, is at his peak. We forget that Fabregas is just 20 years old. He has a good 7 years on Gerrard. Fabregas will go on to become a far better player i think. Its just a shame we will most likely only ever see Gerrard play for Liverpool, because i would love to see him in a side with Man Utd's or Arsenals class, movement and creativity ALL OVER THE PITCH, which i think at the end of the day, Liverpool lack.

Great post. Fabregas reminds me of a younger Scholes, but Spanish
Joe. Posted 16 January 2008 Author Posted 16 January 2008 NeitherI think Paul Scholes is better than both Sorry but got to disagree with you there. I'd say Fabregas and Gerrard are both better than him. I agree with you, Scholes is a top player but I don't think he offers as much to a team as these two. The technical ability that Gerrard and Fabregas each have is superior to Scholes' I think. And Gerrard can definitely tackle better than Scholes As for the topic in question I say Gerrard because he's just such a good player, and I think he edges it quite a bit. His shooting is lethal, his work rate is superb, his tackling is also fantastic. And like Fabregas, his passing is unbelievable at times. The way he's carried Liverpool for the past three seasons has been incredible. In a team that hasn't been great like Liverpool he's managed to stand head and shoulders above the rest.

And Gerrard can definitely tackle better than Scholes Sorry got to disagree with you there People forget that because scholes is older he has lost it, perhaps slightly but still is in the top 5 premier league players for me. For those in the know and know about football, he was actually voted in 3rd place last season in the PFA awards. that ahead of both gerrard and fabregas, however they did make the top 6. He is a top top player and probably best technique wise in the prem, and second to Xabi Alonso in terms of passing. top shot on his aswell as everyone knows. You mentioned tackling...he is an attacking midfielder the same as Fabregas and gerrard so that shouldn't really come into it. Scholes rarely gets the praise he deseves as he is withdrawn in the sense of the media spotlight, by choice obviously. this is the main reason I believe he hasn't got as much recognition as he deserves.
Uncle Albert Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 Gerrard is the best centre midfielder in the world so... I think this because could you see Fabregas, Lampard or Scholes do what Gerrard done in the Champions League final or the F.A cup final? 12 goals in 12 starts also says how good he is.
Ultra Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 Fabregas by a mile. He'll be a star of Euro 2008 while Stevie G is sunning himself on a beach.

DB11 Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 Gerrard - how can it even be debatable? Fabregas might become better but he's not a patch on Gerrard atm IMO
Simi Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 It's a close one for sure. On his day, I find Gerrards range of long balls absolutely phenomenal, not something Fabregas really specialises in. But Cesc does have some amazing vision and first touch passing, as do most of the Arsenal team. They both play in completely different teams so it's hard to compare, at the moment I'd have to go with Gerrard, but Fabregas will only continue to improve.
WetFlannel Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 I personally think Gerrard is the best in the world so my response is pretty obvious... Goals: Gerrard Passing: Fabregas but I'm still convinced Gerrard can hit better long balls (I suppose Cesc is at Arsenal though) Tackling: Gerrard Versatility: Gerrard Tracking back: Gerrard Going Forward: Gerrard How many players in the world could do what Gerrard did in Istanbul or Cardiff? I don't think anyone else could replicate that... In my eyes, no contest (Plus Gerrards a bit of a diver )
Joe. Posted 16 January 2008 Author Posted 16 January 2008 Fabregas every time for me. Gerrard can be outstanding when he feels like it, but he doesn't feel like it often enough. And I can't stand the bloke. What a hypocrite he is! I've seen him moan in interviews on more than one occassion about diving in football, yet he does it more than most. What an absolute load of bollocks. Doesn't feel like it often enough? Gerrard is one of the most consistent and hard working players around.
Mikey Posted 16 January 2008 Posted 16 January 2008 Gerrard, no contest. Maybe in 1 or 2 years Fabregas will be better, but at the moment definitely Gerrard.

For England he's been p!sspoor, especially against quality opponents (eg Croatia home and away) I'd be happy to see him follow his pal Carragher into international retirement.

Because let's face it, there's nobody better. Being totally honest, Gerrard should be England's best player. And saying you wouldn't mind seeing him retire is crazy, he's important for us. I don't know why he doesn't play as well for England, I'm going for a lack of freedom for England that he gets and thrives on for Liverpool.
