Daggers Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 The funeral of a veteran who took part in the prison breakout immortalised in the film The Great Escape has taken place in Shropshire.Sqn Ldr Bertram "Jimmy" James was one of 76 men who broke out of Stalag Luft Three, the supposedly escape-proof Nazi prisoner camp, in World War II. ..."He was tireless in explaining to the young the evils of Nazism and the horrors they perpetrated" BBC Article If you have ten pounds to spare - Project 104
James. Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 "The idea of escape dominated the whole five years of his captivity - he made 13 escape attempts. "When asked why, he replied 'it's my duty as an officer to escape and continue the war'." What a guy.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 1 February 2008 Posted 1 February 2008 I tells you, TRUE war stories beat anything that you get to see on the movie screen. I was once reading about a guy who defeated a tank squadron - single-handed, on foot!! He was awarded the VC. The story of Operation Chariot was pretty awesome too. It was told on BBC1 last year by Jeremy Clarkson. Operation Chariot - The Raid on St Nazaire Worth a read!
Daggers Posted 2 February 2008 Author Posted 2 February 2008 The Colditz Story was just on BBC2 - damn fine show, damn fine.
