SamL Posted 22 March 2008 Posted 22 March 2008 Marcus Trescothick has announced his retirement from international cricket. The Somerset batsman, 32, suffers from a stress-related illness which makes travelling abroad difficult. The former England opener, averaged 43.79 and played in 76 Tests and 123 one-day games, said he was retiring so England could plan their future. He said: "It is in the best interests of all concerned that the issue is put to rest so the England team can concentrate on moving forward." Trescothick last played for England against Pakistan at The Oval in August 2006 but has not featured in an overseas tour since returning before the start of the Ashes in Australia at the end of 2006. Last week, he was set to travel to Dubai with his county team Somerset on a pre-season tour but pulled out when the squad arrived at Heathrow Airport. Trescothick told the Somerset CCC website: "I have tried on numerous occasions to make it back to the international stage and it has proved a lot more difficult than I expected. "I want to extend my playing career for as long as possible and I no longer want to put myself through the questions and demands that go with trying to return to the England team." Trescothick, who scored 5,825 runs for his country and was 11th on the all-time list of England's leading batsman, said he was proud and privileged to have played for his country. But he admitted travelling abroad had become "extremely stressful" and said he instead wanted to concentrate on his Somerset career. "My desire to play cricket is as strong as it ever was," added Trescothick, who made his Test debut against West Indies in 2000. "It is a very big season for the club and I am looking forward very much to playing a full part." Hugh Morris, the newly appointed managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board, paid tribute to Trescothick. "I would like to place on record my thanks to Marcus for the enormous contribution he has made to the England team in both Test and One Day International cricket," he said. "I fully respect and understand his decision to retire from international cricket and wish him every success in his future career with Somerset." Somerset coach Andy Hurry said having Trescothick available for the whole season would be "a great bonus" for the county. "I have spoken to Marcus and he is fully committed to the cause in 2008," Hurry added. "He is a very well respected guy not only for his playing ability but as a person as well. There is lots of empathy with Marcus and great support for him - the boys are right behind him." I know he's been having his problems but I think it's a shame he's made this decision. He's been one of our best batsman over the past few years and with the current side struggling, I'm sure he'll be missed.
Uncle Albert Posted 22 March 2008 Posted 22 March 2008 Was going to happen unfortunetly. Class Batsmen aswell, we could do with him back at the top of the order aswell.
Father Ted Posted 22 March 2008 Posted 22 March 2008 If only he hadn't had all these problems. Him and Cook could have forged a decent partnership together.
SamL Posted 22 March 2008 Author Posted 22 March 2008 If only he hadn't had all these problems. Him and Cook could have forged a decent partnership together. Agreed. I think Michael Vaughan is a good batsman and all, but I don't think he's a good opener. He's pretty good at number 3. Strauss shouldn't be anywhere near the team. He was sent away because he wasn't good enough and got let back in too easily without proving he is worthy of a place.
Mack Posted 23 March 2008 Posted 23 March 2008 What exactly are the problems? I thought he blew out the tour the first time because his misses was 'playing away'.
SamL Posted 23 March 2008 Author Posted 23 March 2008 What exactly are the problems?I thought he blew out the tour the first time because his misses was 'playing away'. Well, the problems haven't been well documented but by the sounds of it he can't hack being an international cricketer due to the increased stress levels. He can't bear being away from his family when England go on tour so he's had to give it up. Shame really, but I can understand why he's done it.
tartanowl Posted 23 March 2008 Posted 23 March 2008 It's a real shame for Trescothick and English cricket. The top order at the moment is struggling for runs and looking quite poor. He would have been an ideal replacement for Strauss who definitely needs dropped.
David O'Leary Posted 25 March 2008 Posted 25 March 2008 What exactly are the problems?I thought he blew out the tour the first time because his misses was 'playing away'. Nope. He just hates going on all these tours the ICC keep setting and just can't be away from his wife and kids for that amount of time. I really hoped he would make it back, but England's loss is Somerset's gain.
Mack Posted 25 March 2008 Posted 25 March 2008 I heard two rumours. The first was about his wife having an affair and that he is now affraid to go away for long periods because he cant trust her and the other had something to do with his brother commiting suicide. Either way, he will never have this time over again and is wasting away what could have been a glorious England Career. He will have decades to sit on his rump at home when he is too old and fat to play anymore, so why not enjoy it whilst you can? Makes no sense to me at all.

The People's Hero Posted 26 March 2008 Posted 26 March 2008 Bloody good cricketer. Somerset will be chuffed about this.
BoneHead. Posted 26 March 2008 Posted 26 March 2008 Terrible shame I think a Tresco return would have helped Strauss out no end... Rekindling there special relationship
