Football ticket prices up sharply

The cost of season tickets for next year at Premier League clubs has risen by 7.2%, more than twice the rate of consumer price inflation.

Research by the BBC reveals that the average cost of a mid-priced season ticket has risen to £590.

Premier League clubs are currently benefiting from television revenues which have gone up sharply.

But that has not prevented most of them from imposing substantial increases in season ticket costs.

That average hides considerable variations. Portsmouth have increased prices by 17.5% at the club's West Stand while Chelsea have again imposed no increase at all. Some fans of champions Manchester United have complained about hefty price increases since the club was taken over by American owners.

For the next campaign a season ticket in the upper east stand will be £665, a 6% increase on last season, but still a lot less than a similar seat at the big London clubs. The reasons for sharp increases vary, with Sunderland pointing to previous seasons when ticket prices have not risen at all.

A statement from Tottenham Hotspur said: "In order to progress both on and off the pitch, we need to be able to continue to raise our level of investment in the squad and all areas of the club's operations and facilities."

Bolton, Liverpool and Newcastle are yet to reveal prices for next season's matches.

The BBC compared season ticket prices in middle priced stands between the 2007/8 and 2008/9 seasons.

I'm glad we're not in the Prem.

Championship is the best league in England.

What are the governing bodies going to do about this then? Nothing I hear you say. :yesyes:

Investing in the squad is a piss poor excuse, the increase in ticket prices is massive for the average punter but compared to their other income streams like TV it's a drop in the ocean to the club, just another excuse to rip off the fans and line the pockets of those running this game of ours.

Beleive it or not, I do realise that.

It's just a con so they can make it seem like they're doing it for the fans benefit. It's complete shite. Makes me hate this game at times, when you compare our game to other countries, we're a laughing stock.

Unfortunately it's not the game it's the fans who are the laughing stock for putting up with it, but then I guess it reflects what's happening in all areas of Britain, our title of rip off Britain is well deserved.

I blame VAT because it gives the Government of the day no incentive to ensure fairness in business & pricing because every price increase gives them more money to waste.

Yeah, I was going to get on with that.

In most countries other than this one, there would be a protest of NOBODY buying a ticket until the prices are decreased. English people don't seem to have it in them. Not just that but there is always some **** who wants a ST as a fashion accesory, it's wrong on so many levels. Yet the governing bodies haven't got it in them to step in and jump on the toes of the big boys.

Supply and demand has a lot to answer for.

But that not strickly true there are many empty seats it's just current service industry philosophy to charge more and get less people, that's why buses and can run half empty and still make a profit.

Customers are a pain in the arse to most service type businesses so the less the have to deal with the better.

Not to mention the ludicrous amounts of money I'll be spending tomorrow. £40 match ticket. £10 programmes. About £15 for travel. Let alone food. :( And it will all amount to a 0 - 0 draw.

I was alluding to the ever willingness of football supporters to continue paying higher and higher prices, particularly at places like Man U, Liverpool, Spurs, etc where they will continue to sell out the stadium.

If I recall rightly attendances are on average falling but until there is some sort of mass protest by supporters including boycotts nothing will change. In economic terms demand is highly price inelastic. In laymans terms we are mugs.

So why are you doing it?

You don't have to buy a programme.

Meanwhile you can pick up a Season ticket in germany for around 150 quid. On a terrace. With beer. Good beer. And the football is actually quite good, obviosuly not up to scratch of prem, but I know what I'd prefer.
