davieG Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 I was once told by the company I worked for that they didn't think I was interested in promotion to management level because I didn't wear a tie to work. Outrageous and also funny really because at the time I was supervising an engineering workshop where wearing a tie would be pretty hazardous and irresponsible thing to do. What reasons have you been given for not getting a job?

Outrageous and also funny really because at the time I was supervising an engineering workshop where wearing a tie would be pretty hazardous and irresponsible thing to do. What reasons have you been given for not getting a job? I got told they couldn't afford me, got told this by 2 companies ...I'm that good and come at a big price Nah basically when I was doing my apprenticeship I was told they could give me bits and bobs of work but they couldn't afford to take me on perminent because they were small 1 man companys. It's a shame really because people like that would love to take someone on (An Apprentice would be perfect for them) but they just can't afford to. Think thats about it for me.
Zingari Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 my boss told me he would not be recommending me for promotion due to " impaired judgement due to alcohol " i told him i'd re-apply when he was sober

Lillehamring Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 i went for an internal promotion when i worked for a&l and was told 'we didn't think you wanted it as you didn't write much in your application about your current position' then when i worked for further lending, again at A&L, i went for a team leader type job, proper interview with powerpoint presentation, interviewed by the head of mortgages, and was declined as i used 'too many long words'
act smiley Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 I applied for an entry level shop assistant job and get turned down for having no retail experience. How the hell does that work? Thought "stuff that", went back to uni and got a job doing software support for a major supplier of software to the financial industry. Have that, smarmy shop-manager twat who laughed me out of there.
syston_fox Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 The one that annoys me is when people say you're too qualified for a job!! After struggling to find a job after uni that really annoyed me as I would have taken near enough anything to do with accountancy at that point but they were only employing people straight from A-Levels!
samingram_uk Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 I applied for B&Q but said i was too friendly......true story.
AoWW Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 I applied for B&Q but said i was too friendly......true story. Perhaps you weren't supposed to grope the interviewer?
Lillehamring Posted 7 September 2008 Posted 7 September 2008 I applied for B&Q but said i was too friendly......true story. on a similar wavelength to that, i left a job as assistant manager in a pub on richmond hill by 'mutual consent' - apparently on the landlord's side this was because i 'talked to the customers'...
Tabou Posted 8 September 2008 Posted 8 September 2008 Apparently, after a lengthy meeting with our 'board' on Friday, the key to job preservtion is not to say :- "If that's your attitude you can stick your job up your a*se you ****". I am now looking for alternative employment whilst I (just about) still have a job. HSBC assesment in London on the 24th September, time to prepare!

I am now looking for alternative employment whilst I (just about) still have a job. HSBC assesment in London on the 24th September, time to prepare! I had to threaten to quit for my last promotion and i'm thinking I have to do the same again, which is really sad!! I have been turned down for many jobs, due to various reasons, including over qualified (why bother interviewing someone not qualfied enough), under qualified (same goes), too smart for our environment (job was in a factory environment, I wore a suit for the interview)!!

They're cheaper.
