Palace U18 4 City U18 1

The home side raced into a 2-0 advantage before Billy Kee pulled a goal back just before half-time on Saturday.

However, Palace upped the anti after the break and scored a further two goals to inflict a second league defeat of the campaign on the Foxes.

Academy Manager Jon Rudkin said: "It was another tough, physical battle and we were overpowered in the end by a useful Crystal Palace team.

"But there were plenty of positives to take out of the game whilst we will learn from our mistakes."

The Under-18s are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Ipswich Town.

Team: Ambrusics, O'Neill, Garner, Parkes, Cobb, Hicks, Cox, Vassey, Burns, Kee, King C.

That's two defeats and a draw so far and evidence aplenty that the latest crop of Under 18's have much improving to do before they can ever hope to emulate the achievements of their recent predecessors.

Having no reserve team either means that they'll miss having the benefit of playing match football with and against teams with a sprinkling of Football League-quality seniors.

Looks like the next batch of Academy lads aren't quite as advanced as we've been used to in recent years. I hope nothing has changed in terms of development, coaching and recruitment of the best youngsters in the area.

Aren't Crystal Palace one of the better sides at academy level, this going on the fact that they seem to have produced quite a few good 'uns like Bostock e.t.c.

They are, but in recent years we've beaten them quite comfortably if I remember rightly. 2 defeates and a draw is the worst run of results from our Academy team for about 3 seasons.

The under 18s in recent seasons have included players that had left other professional clubs at the age of 16 and signed for us. Now the under 18s is made up mostly of players that have been at the club since a young age. Maybe the results that the under 18s are producing at the moment are a better indicator of the quality of youngsters in the area than past seasons?

Possibly. That's why I also raised the question as to whether we've stopped looking at bringing in youngsters from other clubs. As you say, the majority of the youngsters that have been quality at youth level for us have come from other clubs/areas.
