Trav Le Bleu Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 Awww Tbh, with some of the teasing comments already posted, I did expect a few more reviews by this time There is - ahem - only one person who has reviewed all of the mixes so far
shen Posted 28 October 2008 Author Posted 28 October 2008 There is - ahem - only one person who has reviewed all of the mixes so far Well it would look silly if I reviewed my own mix And you've not reviewed Fez's mix yet
shen Posted 30 October 2008 Author Posted 30 October 2008 Shen don't worry I will do this one, promise! I'm currently only worrying about my exams
Trav Le Bleu Posted 30 October 2008 Posted 30 October 2008 Well it would look silly if I reviewed my own mix And you've not reviewed Fez's mix yet Well at least we're both on the ball!
Mark Posted 30 October 2008 Posted 30 October 2008 This was ok, I liked a couple of tracks.... Pineapple Thief - Really liked this one! Nosound - the ambient sounds go well with me, brilliant Archive & Ours - decent songs but not something I'd sit down and listen to. Porcupine Tree, Oceansize & Tool, three bands I've never been able to get into and still can't, they just not for me (apart from music for a nurse by Oceansize) The ending to Saturday Morning Breakfast Show is great, however. Amplifier, Living Things, Anock, Soulwax, Mc900, Afro Celt - songs did nothing for me at all. 4.5/10

Their earlier stuff (Signify) might be more to your liking. If you liked the ending of SMBS, I'd highly recommend you to check out "Trail Of Fire" (which is on my previous mix) Thanks for the review!
Fez of Mahrez Posted 5 November 2008 Posted 5 November 2008 Amplifier - The Consultancy This mob were mentioned a lot on the Muse forums when support acts were being mooted for the big Muse gigs at Wembley, by a lot of people who were also suggesting Wolfmother so I always meant to check them out. Really liked this, reminded me a bit of Velvet Revolver although I doubt that's a solid reference point, I don't listen to much heavier stuff these days. Archive - Numb If there's one band that you can't seem to make any sort of rock music without being compared to at some stage in your career, I'd say it's Radiohead. I used to like a lot of bands that people would just say "they want to sound like Radiohead" about so I hate that phrase, but let's face it, the intro here could be Thom Yorke. Which is a good thing in this case, I like it - especially the pulsing bass and drums at the start. Although it doesn't necessarily "go anywhere", I don't think that's always a bad thing. Quiet-loud-quiet-quiet-loud is a bit passé these days, this sort of thing is quite interesting to me at the moment. Songs that sound like an intro but it's actually the full song. It'd be very easy to launch into a huge, heavy guitar anthem but it's been done. Nosound - About Butterflies and Children I love the synth/organ/whatever intro. Ah, it's the full song again! That took me by slow-burning surprise for the second time in a row. Really enjoyed this, will be looking into them a bit further. Never heard of them before. Tool - The Patient Back when I was a massive System of a Down fan (7-8 years ago), my mate insisted that I listen to Lateralus, I never quite got it although I could tell it was more interesting than most music. As soon as I saw this mix uploaded, I burnt it to CD and played it on the way to a midweek game, driving up to Leicester in the dark, think it was Walsall. This atmospheric little number was a killer. Sitting here now listening to it, doesn't pack quite the same punch but I like it. Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes I really shouldn't like this but it has a certain charm. I don't like the chorus though, too poppy-sounding for me. The verses have a nice tone to them. Living Things - God Made Hate Reminds me a little bit of that whole Dandy Warhols/BRMC type thing around the year 2001. Can't decide whether I like it, it's not particularly clever (as I think some of the first few tracks have been) but a decent tune. Anouk - I Alone Absolutely terrible. Like Tracy Chapman crossed with Alanis Morisette?!?! Ha, I'm probably invoking the rage of a million Danes (?) here. Hate it. Soulwax - Too Many DJs The first song I'm familiar with. A good pop-rock song although I've never been that bothered about Soulwax as a band, I think their studio albums pale in comparison with 2 Many DJs. MC 900 Foot Jesus - Killer Inside Me Sounds like a Black Grape tribute band, not something I will be following up!! Afro Celt Sound System - Lovers of Light I reckon I saw these at a free anti-racism festival in London in the mid-90s. Great stuff. The fiddle would get on my nerves if I played it a lot but as a quick blast, fantastic. I pigeonhole these in with Asian Dub Foundation Porcupine Tree - Sleep Together This one isn't for me. Sounds like it would be on the soundtrack to some sort of goth fantasy film. Pineapple Thief - Dead In The Water Singer sounds like Ben Gautrey from the Cooper Temple Clause, which is great. Really like this, sounds like something they might have done actually. Like this a lot. Are they from the Reading area by any chance?? I'm going to look it up now, they're probably from Canada or something knowing me (oops, I put Porcupine Thief into Google by mistake...) Hey, Yeovil!!! That's not too far out. I don't know if the rest of their stuff sounds like this but I bet they listened to a bit of TCTC a few years back. Actually, have carried on reading and they were around at the same time so probably supported TCTC I'd imagine. No telling who influenced who after all. I may have done them a disservice. Ours - Fallen Souls Yeah, I quite like this too. Interesting percussion etc. Vocals are a bit too OTT for me but I will give this another listen at some point. Oceansize - Saturday Morning Breakfast Show I'm not sure I'm in the mood for a 9-minute epic at the moment, I will definitely give it a listen in the car at some point though. Just skipping through it, probably not my thing. ------- Overall: Really enjoyed it. I thought most of it was going to be like that dreadful Garden of something or other song that Finners put on his last compilation. Volbeat, that was it. But no, lots here I enjoyed a lot and will give another listen to. Many thanks, very interesting!!

As for Anouk, she's Dutch so no worries
shen Posted 8 November 2008 Author Posted 8 November 2008 8. Soulwax - Too Many DJ'sFamiliar with this - got plenty of Soulwax stuff, though this is far from their best. Prefer them when they are doing electro. Soulwax - Too Many DJsThe first song I'm familiar with. A good pop-rock song although I've never been that bothered about Soulwax as a band, I think their studio albums pale in comparison with 2 Many DJs. Was thinking about this, and while I really like 2 many DJs, I think the rock-ish Soulwax songs are very much underrated (especially the MAEA album). Maybe it's just the Belgian accent that works it's magic on me, but I really think they're an accomplished rock act too. On a sidenote, I'm beginning to think this CD Swap is already petering out *Nudges AoWW and Joe and the rest that could be bothered with this*
Jay Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 1. Amplifier - The Consultancy Takes ages to get going and when it does I don't really like it. it sounds very dated to me could have easily been one of about a gazillion bands from the mid 90's 2. Archive - Numb another one that takes about 4hrs to get going and when it does it doesn't really get anywhere it's ok but not in a hurry to listen to it again. 3. Nosound - About Butterflies and Children what is it with you and massive prolonged build ups!!!! far to ambient for me. 4. Tool - The Patient only 1.10mins for this one to start... Saw Tool once only really heard the album with Sober and Prison Sex on and I don't mind them infact I quite like them but not sure about this one just doesn't grab me 5. Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes Not for me in any way. 6. The Living Things - God Made Hate put off by the guitar riff at the start sounds far to ZZ Topish for my liking could stand this one 7. Anouk (ft. Sarah Bettens) - I Alone thought I like this at first then changed my mind pretty quickly 8. Soulwax - Too Many DJ's finally!!! I quite like Soulwax I do enjoy the any minute now album in particular. 9. MC 900 Foot Jesus - Killer Inside Me yeah it's ok sounds a bit like MC Lars 2 in a row!!! 10. * make that 3 with The Pythons 11. Afro Celt Sound System - Lovers Of Light NO NO NO ARRRRRRGH Just don't like this I love my trad Irish style music The Pogues, The Tossers, Flogging Molly,Dubliners etc but this just sounds so wrong on so many levels to me 12. Porcupine Tree - Sleep Together really not my thing 13. The Pineapple Thief - Dead In The Water This ones ok to be fair I can listen to this one. 14. Ours - Fallen Souls Next.... sounds to Him ish for my liking 15. Oceansize - Saturday Morning Breakfast Show didn't float my boat goes on far to long Overall I do consider myself to have a very eclectic taste in music liking things from Hip Hop to Drum + Bass to DC Hardcore, Punk, reggae, run of the mill indie, alternative and electronic through to the likes of The Who, Dylan, Cash and Guthrie so a really broad spectrum but o be brutally honest I really did struggle to get into this mix it just really isn't my thing infact it's probably about as far away as you could get!!!
