Thracian Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 With Mattock seemingly established in the team and City in one of the promotion places, I don't see why Mattock would personally be in a hurry to leave. There's nothing like an achievement on a footballer's CV and if Mattock moves to a Premiership or even Championship club I don't think there's any guarantee at this stage that he will keep his place. But Mattock's always been fast-tracked at City and Mandaric has long been aware of the interest in him and the potential to sell him for good money. Mattock and his agent have been equally aware of that too. So Mattock's departure is probably inevitable anyway in the fairly short term and my only real concern is that we have an adequate replacement and cover. By that I mean another fit, quick, wing-back.
Corky Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 I think it's up to Mattock really. If he stays, he can develop, play regularly and hopefully have success on the way, then we sell him for a good fee, like with Heskey. But he may want top football now, so any big offer may be too tempting for him, and Mandaric won't turn down good money. Personally I think he should stay, he'll get better by playing and we'll reap the rewards, and it would be a statement of intent from the club.
Cobbo Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 Average Joe. Get a decent price and it is no major loss to the team. Powell and Berner are more than capable this season. Then Berner beyond that.
Candidcamera Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 It is indeed difficult to replace your best players.
Thracian Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 It is indeed difficult to replace your best players. The problem is replacing in kind. Mattock's not anywhere near the finished article but he's a genuine wing-back. And I imagine we'll be happy to stick with another part-answer replacement. It happened with Clapham last season and I don't expect anything different this time. Defenders who are simply defenders don't impress me much and I don't think they are ever quite good enough for a club with ambition. But we'll see. Division One is so ordinary we may get away with it.
Munzie Posted 15 November 2008 Posted 15 November 2008 If he goes to a Premiership team now, he will become another 'young talented player with potential'. The trouble is, the Premiership teams are overflowing with this type of player. He won't walk in to any first team at the moment. He'll have to settle for reserve fixtures and early rounds of cup competitions only, possibly for quite a while. Like Thrac says, he is nowhere near the polished article and will be better off achieving something first to help boost his confidence and rating. Being part of a promotion winning side is a good start.
