davieG Posted 10 November 2008 Posted 10 November 2008 by Bill Anderson The Derby connection seems to have paid dividends for Leicester City with the latest arrival Marc Edworthy slotting into the right-back spot on Saturday. It was a whirlwind debut for the ex-Ram, coming just 24 hours after he put pen to paper as a free agent on terms lasting until January. And the prospect of a longer contract was strengthened by his display in the Cup tie against Stevenage. Indeed, it seems as if he has ended one trial and started another one. He went to train with City to prove his strength and now he has until the turn of the years to land a more permanent deal. The 35-year-old said: "After I got released from Derby, I got a call from my good friend Matt Oakley and came along to do some training. I proved I was fit and then it was just a case of landing a short-term contract and waiting to see what happens after that. "A move here would really suit me because I still live in Derby." Edworthy could be excused for having a jaundiced view of City because he was part of the Palace side who were beaten by Steve Claridge's last-gasp play-off winner at Wembley to spark off the Martin O'Neill era. Indeed, he could be considered the key man in that result in a peculiar way. With City trailing, he brought down Muzzy Izzet for the equalising penalty then fouled Emile Heskey for the free-kick which led to the winner - so the Blue Army should be grateful to him! Edworthy said: "It was a long time ago and we went on the next year to beat Sheffield United so it was great to get back-to-back Wembley finals. I was also in the Norwich team who won the Championship outright. "Now I would like to play some part in getting Leicester promoted if I can. All the factors are here - a good squad and a good manager - so it is up to me now to prove myself. "I have been promoted four times. I won the Championship with Norwich and I have played in the Premiership, so I think I bring some experience." That experience was clear against Stevenage which might have been an awkward game for a newcomer, facing the inevitable possibility of a banana skin against non-League opposition. The settling-in process was not helped by an early injury to Patrick Kisnorbo, who was alongside him in the back four. Edworthy said: "The important thing was the result. It was a good team performance and I was delighted to get 90 minutes under my belt. "It was a big day for them, we had to respect them in every way and they made it difficult at times. But we stamped our authority on the game and were worthy winners. After Patrick went off, we soon got organised and kept our shape for a clean sheet, so I was delighted."
Darkzzz_ Posted 10 November 2008 Posted 10 November 2008 If he does well then why not. Let's just see how it goes.
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 10 November 2008 Posted 10 November 2008 Sufficient back up for Gilbert,Nothing more. Too true, but the problem is if he does proves useful and stays 'til the end of the season, Pearson may feel obliged to give him a one year extension if we get to the Championship and he just isn't good enough I'm afraid.
