A 600-year-old brewery will close its west London site next year, leaving nearly 200 workers facing redundancy.

The Stag Brewery in Mortlake has operated since the 15th century and currently employs 182 staff.

Owner InBev said the facility, which brews Budweiser, Bud Ice and Michelob, will be closed under restructuring plans.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) called the decision a "sad day" for the drinks industry.

The decision follows InBev's merger with Anheuser-Busch last year.

In a statement, the company said: "This announcement is not a reflection on the quality of our employees, who will be an integral part of this process and will be treated with respect throughout."

Simon McGuinness, brewing engineer and Unite steward, said: "Of course it's come as a shock. Some of us have only found out this morning.

"We think we're a lean, mean brewing outfit, and we want to be given a chance.

"The brewing industry is in recession, and every brewery is looking over its shoulder at the moment.

"Certainly the government hasn't helped with the excess duty on alcohol. They've been very punitive."

Iain Loe, of CAMRA, said: "This brewery has not made any real ale for a long time, but its closure is obviously a sad day for the industry and the workers.

"It is a reflection of what is happening, with firms becoming global brewers.

"It contrasts with what other firms such as Fuller's are doing, by investing in their breweries.

"Real ale is one of the growth areas in the industry and, especially in times of recession, InBev should be looking to invest in local breweries."

The brewery was previously owned by Watneys as well as a joint venture between Anheuser-Busch and Scottish Courage.

I don't think the Budweiser name will be disappearing soon. That brand will be worth billions, although that's no consolation to the soon-to-be-not-employees.

Not a fan of the Anhauser-Busch brands; definitely a case of getting out what you put in.

I deal with KNDL Scottish Courage through work and this has nothing to with going bust infact it's the exact opposite they are moving production to a massive new development somewhere near Reading

That's what I thought it sounded like. Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure someone will ) but breweries tend to do quite well at times of recession as people turn to drink more.

yeah KNDL are massive they include a shed load of top brands under their wing and have some massive breweries up and down the country from Aberdeen to Eastbourne they have massive distribution warehouses all over the place.

As you say people can't afford the Mortgage so get drunk to drown their sorrows

They'd probably have been better off if they had been brewing real ale.

The chemical piss they've been forced to make can be churned out anywhere

Ludicrous. After somebody in a Camra t-shirt mocked me for buying a Bud not long ago. <_<

Still, Bud better be fine. Until after the Superbowl, at least. Then it can do whatever the **** it likes!

Last summer my vegetable garden was under a slug attack. I put out two bait traps..one soaked in Bud, the other with a leftover bottle of Duvel. (opened but not finished from the night before) The Duvel soaked trap had over a dozen of the suckers, dead but with smiles on their little faces. The Bud soaked trap had one (female I believe, as they generally know little about the quality of beer  ) dead slug. True story.... A/B can die a quiet death.
