MC Prussian Posted 7 March 2009 Posted 7 March 2009 For about more than a month now, I'm no longer able to listen to the Audio commentary during Leicester City matches. I'm a proud owner of a Mac for about half a year now and am a little bit disappointed by the way I'm treated these days. So, the nice guy I am, I wrote to the company that pretty much owns and operates the World pages for almost all league clubs, premiumtv: Dear ladies and gents, I'm a fellow LCFC supporter and LCFC World subscriber from outside the UK and have been using an Apple computer for about half a year now. In the past few months, I could listen to the audio commentary during each week's game(s) through the Match Live console. Since about end of January/early February, this is now no longer possible. Also, I am unable to watch the highlights or any other video through LCFC World. Now, that services have stopped, I wonder why Mac users are left out of the game. Seeing that I'm a paying customer, you'd expect this technical issue solved at the start of the season already. I don't know if you've received similar complaints from other Mac users before, but for my part, I find it disappointing that you cannot offer support for both systems. What can be done to make this work? Many thanks in advance. And this is what I got back as a reply just today: Thank you for contacting us. Following the rapid growth of a range of video and stream sharing websites over recent months, a significant volume of content which is provided on an exclusive basis to subscribers was being made freely available on the Internet. We have to have a solution that will satisfactorily safeguard the content. This has required us to DRM the content and due to changes made recently we are no longer able to support Apple / Mac products. Specifically Windows Media Player is longer supported on this platform and likewise IE6.0. This has been extended to all our sites and services including MatchLive, if you can access the service from a Windows machine supporting the above products, please do so. If however this is not possible we can offer a refund for unused portion of your subscription. Please notify us by return if you wish to take this option. This company has always since our inception provided all of our services through and in conjunction with Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. We have invested heavily in this technology along with our customers, all of our content is in this format, therefore we continued with this platform when introducing a DRM solution for our clients. Best Regards, Leicester City World - Web Support So basically, as a Mac owner, I'm told to **** off just because they weren't good enough to protect their own software from being ripped. Funny enough, though that the safety issue with Windows has no connection to a possible service provided to Macs. They're probably just too busy sorting out their current technical issues and just can't give a *bleep* about "special wishes". Thanks, LCFC World. I appreciate your cooperation and support.
marbelladave Posted 7 March 2009 Posted 7 March 2009 The reply from LC World is the usual bullshit, and easily refutable! The vast majority of all piracy / unorthorised streaming of all copywrite material takes place on windows machines and content providers are desperate to stop this. Microsoft provide the streaming software free or at minimal cost and the DRM software stops non registered users accessing the stream. This is nothing to do with Mac users, microsoft could easily have 'supported' alternative platforms but chose not to, this is purely a business decision. (The subsidised software supplied forces users to use microsoft's windoze / Internet Explorer software, much to microsofts delight) It is a deliberate choice to limit access to streaming media to windows users as microsoft are fed up with Apple destroying microsoft in the streaming music and video areas. If you can bear it, and are using an up to date Intel based Mac, you can use Bootcamp to run windows and IE whatever to connect to LC world, cost is about £50 for a legal OEM copy of windows XP. Of course if you know or have access to windows software it might be even cheaper.

The only 'service' LCFC world provide is an attempt to buy a monopoly on content that I have already paid to be produced, through my licence fee, and charge me for a second time to listen to it. Thankfully they are particuarly inept crooks, can't protect 'their' content and can't provide a usable format for mac users such as myself.

If you live in Leicester you can listen for free, why should we have to pay if we do not, we still pay our licence fee! This is one issue. Microsofts abuse of it's market position to force people to use their software is another, I know they are losing money hand over fist at the moment but attempting to force users to buy their software is not the answer. I outlined the least expensive way to listen legally on the Mac in my post above but that still involves buying Microsoft product, something I avoid if at all possible. I do not as a rule use anything other than proper, legal software and I pay for my music downloads but this is one occasion I would really make an exception.

Len Finsbury Posted 12 March 2009 Posted 12 March 2009 I found out about this a while ago, luckily I have access to a Windoze computer too. I can't complain really, we have a syndicate running that share a World membership and we all listen to the match whilst only paying once. Radio Leicester could do with going digital, then those of us outside of the FM frequency can still get it on DAB for free.

RL is on DAB, Stan. But the football league does not permit them to broadcast the commentary on digital because the clubs have signed away exclusive rights to those godawful "world" websites. It's pitiful. DRM is a right royal pain in the arse.

hairy Posted 13 March 2009 Posted 13 March 2009 RL is on DAB, Stan. Yes it is but when City and Tigers are playing at the same time they cover the City game on FM and the Tigers on DAB. Having gone totally digital in our house I found myself having to buy an FM radio to listen to City. Fuk Off Tigers!
