Matty Fryatt and Rickie Lambert are the notable omissions from the League One Squad. There is no doubt that they have had impressive seasons in front of goal and in a ‘normal year’ one or both are sure to have been included in the squad. 2008/09 has been far from a normal year with no fewer than seven players scoring more than twenty league goals therefore there were plenty of contenders to spearhead the attack. We deemed that the overall contribution and influence of Jermaine Beckford, Gary Hooper and Simon Cox for their respective teams gave them a slight edge over Fryatt and Lambert who have both not been as effective in the second half of the season after flying starts to the campaign. Fryatt’s strike partner Steve Howard was selected as the squads targetman as, along with Millwall’s Gary Alexander, he been the best leader of the line in the division.

Theo Robinson was our ‘Theo Walcott wild card’ selection judged on the potential he has shown since moving to Roots Hall in January. Before Robinson and Dorian Dervite arrived in January, Southend having lost all their loan stars were in freefall and Playerform were predicting they could potentially get dragged into a relegation battle. Consequently they have done remarkably well to reach the outer fringes of the plays offs and there is little doubt that Robinson and Dervite have provided the catalyst for the Shrimpers impressive form in the second half of the season. Sean Thornton was another ‘controversial’ selection but without their revitalised enigma providing much needed creativity in midfield the O’s would almost certainly be planning for life in the basement division of English football next season.

Good to see Tunchev getting some recognition its easy to forget how impressive he was in the first half of the season.

Yes, slightly biased towards MK Dons and Leeds.

Omitting Fryatt because of a low form, but using Tunchev in the squad who has not played more than 50 percent of this season???

No credit to Brown, Hobbs, Morrison in the centre???

No mention of either Oakley or King???

Oh well, weirder stuff has happened.

Hobbs did get a mention

In Tunchev’s absence, on loan Liverpool youngster Jack Hobbs has really matured and he should be able to make further progress next season. With his prospects of regular football at Anfield slim he has been allowed to join Leicester on a permanent basis.

and Oakley

Matt Oakley (Leicester City), Dean Hammond (Colchester United) and Grant McCann (S****horpe United) are three solid professionals who have performed consistently well for their respective clubs over the course of the season. While the former will need to raise his game to compete in the Championship, Hammond and McCann will both be key players as Colchester and S****horpe, who as the weakest of the sides constesting the play offs look as if they could fall at the final hurdle, aim to improve on this seasons failure to bounce straight back to the Championship after being relegated in May 08.

and Dyer

Wingers are notoriously frustrating performers and Mark Yeates (Colchester United), Chris Taylor (Oldham Athletic) and Lloyd Dyer (Leicester City) have all reinforced this notion with some inconsistent displays over the course of the season. At the top of their game the trio possess the ability to destroy any side in the division as they have regularly shown therefore it becomes all the more infuriating for their teams supporters when they put in lacklustre efforts. Yeates and Taylor have both appeared to be adversely effected by speculation over their future while Dyer enjoyed a tremendous start to life in League One before entering into a form slump that appeared to last an eternity. Fortunately Dyer finally bounced back to his best when it mattered in the closing weeks of the season and he was very impressive in helping the Foxes clinch promotion.

Sound selection and sound analysis.

More thought has gone into this selection than the other L1 select team announced previously.
