davieG Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 Now a lottery since they changed the rule from deliberate (hand to ball) intent. Now it's become a total toss up whether you get the decision or not and as hard to judge as off-sides. Certainly not as clear cut as it used to be.
Fox92 Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 There stupid. I mean, did anyone see that one given against Richard Dunne?
Webbo Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 There stupid.I mean, did anyone see that one given against Richard Dunne? Tbh I agreed with that. Whether it was deliberate or not that ball could have been on target and been a goal. Everyone on here would have been fuming if we hadn't been awarded that penalty.

Everyone on here would have been fuming if we hadn't been awarded that penalty. We'll never know because the goalkeeper was behind him. The punishment of an almost guaranteed goal for accidental handball is way over the top. There are many more worse examples than this one and plenty that are just as bad or worse but not given. It's the overall picture of it being a lottery that bothers me, we all know how inconsistent referees can be and this just adds another burden creating an additional controversy maker to their role. I never did understand why it changed from hand to ball - penalty, ball to hand no penalty all seemed so simple now it's 'flip a coin time'.
AmericanScott Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 There stupid.I mean, did anyone see that one given against Richard Dunne? That was a tough call for the ref to make. It appeared Dunne was only protecting himself from that striker's high kick. It's a natural instinct to guard your face in such a situation. Very unlucky the ball went against his forearm there.

It was harsh on Dunne, but for me it was just about the right call.
Edmund Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 Again its all down to common sense and like you said Davie its a lottery dependent on the referee in charge. These penalties given for accidental handball are ridiculous as if that was the case a striker could just run into the box each time and just aim for the defenders arm to gain a penalty. It should be obvious to the referees judging by the body language of the player. Sometimes you see defenders falling over and natural reaction is to float their arms for balance as they fall yet the ball will travel in there direction and a penalty is given. Penalties should be only given as a result of handball when a player is deliberately blocking the ball with the use of his arm. On the same note of refereeing did anyone see the highlights of the MK Dons-Leeds match where Puncheon got sent off? He tackled a player with a slide tackle raising both feet but got the ball cleanly. Because he did a two foot tackle he got sent off even though he got the ball. Ridiculous.
DB11 Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 I find them pretty easy to decide; I don't give any! If I give a handball, then a card is coming out. This is becuse to give the free kick, the handball must have been deliberate. If it was deliberate, then it's a deliberate act and is the same as deliberately and knowingly pulling an opponent back. I give very, very few handballs. The players (well parents mainly) always shout for it after the first one, but, very loudly I might add lol, shout play on accidental, and they don't ask again

acooling08 Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 The dunne one was definately a penalty. He saw the player about to shoot so he put his arm up to block it.

davieG Posted 28 September 2009 Author Posted 28 September 2009 The dunne one was definately a penalty. He saw the player about to shoot so he put his arm up to block it. So he could predict accurately where he was going to kick it
dandannieldanok Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 So he could predict accurately where he was going to kick it No, but the striker was clearly lining-up an overhead kick and from those close-quarters Dunne put his arms up to make himself a far bigger target to block the ball. It wasn't the clearest deliberate handball you will ever see, but his hands were up there for a reason.
