Louise Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 As no-one else has posted it... City Trio Receive International Call-Ups City players Paddy McCarthy, Stephen Dawson and Alan Sheehan have been called up into the Republic of Ireland Under 21 squad for a training camp at Lilleshall National Sports Centre next week. The trio, who were all involved in the Foxes squad for their trip to Plymouth Argyle on Sunday, will travel to Shropshire on Monday for a five-day get-together ahead of Ireland's European Under-21 Championship Qualifier against Israel on Friday, June 3. McCarthy has impressed since moving to the Walkers Stadium from Manchester City in March while 18-year-old Sheehan made his Foxes first-team debut against the Pilgrims at the weekend. Dublin-born Dawson (19), meanwhile, was last week offered a new contract by manager Craig Levein. He joined City from Portmarnock FC in 2001 after being spotted by a scout. http://www.lcfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/...~663510,00.html Great news, for Sheehan especially, being the youngest of the three and just making his club debut. With Connolly and Maybury as well we have more Republic of Ireland players than we do the Scottish ones we're always being teased about!
Nationwider Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 This bodes really well. A core of young, improving (squad) players involved in the same international set-up reflects well on the club. It should really help club morale, team bonding etc. For all three, hopefully this will act as a real catalyst for their careers. Who knows, in 5 years we could have the core of the Rep. of Ireland side playing for us, if Maybury and Connolly stick around!??!
Scow Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 Great news for Dawson and Sheehan - I know Dawson has been called up before, so one of their scouts must have been keeping an eye on him in the reserves.
The Man With The Golden Grahams Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 Fantastic news. Great experience for them. They can only improve. I'd love to see Sheehan given a chance to impress from the start next term, in place of Stewart. Anyone agree?
EmLeee Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 I thought Paddy was 22! 106173 not till May 31st

Anyone agree? 106177 He certainly looks more composed at left back than Jordan - And has a much better cross on him. The only thing that Stewart has over Sheehan is experience and pace...
Frenzied Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 I certainly do. Sheehan looked fairly good on his debut and with more first team experience will hopefully improve further. I'm no fan of Stewart - he holds onto the ball too long, often takes the wrong option, is a poor passer and isn't that adept at tackling.

Maybe Forest would be interested?

Nationwider Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 I thought Paddy was 22! 106173 not till May 31st 106179 Either way, he's still young in terms of actaul age, 1st team and international experience.
Anish Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 Excellent news for all 3 of them, let's hope they can continue to progress and impress the RoI bosses at the same time.

MON Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 It's true. Steve Guppy played in his late twentys for England under 21's
TrickyTrev Posted 10 May 2005 Posted 10 May 2005 It's true. Steve Guppy played in his late twentys for England under 21's 106266 I think you are thinking of his England 'B' caps before the 1998 world cup. Heskey played in them as well and Chris Sutton infamously refused to show up.

natas Posted 11 May 2005 Posted 11 May 2005 While we are on the subject of call-ups, I'll just add that Wesolowski is in the Australia squad for the Fifa world youth championships which is taking place in the Netherlands in June. He's the second youngest player in the squad and with one of our main midfielders looking doubtful for the tournament he should probably get a fair bit of game time.

Not even mentioned on official LCFC site he's in U21's team for World Cup in June, yet the Irish lads are up there. Not another Canero news blackout.Anyone know??

natas Posted 11 May 2005 Posted 11 May 2005 nah, it's U-20 age group, including 20 year old, so it's more or less under-21s
Ric Flair Posted 11 May 2005 Posted 11 May 2005 I think he's being kept quiet to keep the vultures away, but you'd think he'd be up for academy player of the year. Having said that he has been injured for 2 months and away with Australia for 1 month so whetehr that means he hasn't played enough for them to be up for the award i'm not sure. He's even better than Dawson in my opinion and both are more than capable of professional football. If I get to speak to Levein in the near future i'll be asking him about Wesolowski. I think a loan deal to a League One club next season would do him the world of good.
Vo Rogue Posted 11 May 2005 Posted 11 May 2005 I think a few clubs wanted him on loan this year but were turned down.
