There are other options open to these people, shoplifting, robbery or prostitution :dunno:

A priest who advised needy people to shoplift in certain circumstances has been criticised by a retailers' group.

Father Tim Jones, parish priest of St Lawrence and St Hilda in York, said stealing was a "better moral thing to do" than robbery or prostitution.

However, Richard Dobbs, of the British Retail Consortium, said shoplifting was "simply wrong".

Father Jones has defended his remarks and said such action was "dreadful" but sometimes people's only option.

The priest's comments were made in a sermon to his congregation on Sunday where he said stealing from large national chains was sometimes the best option for many vulnerable people.

In depth? It is a parody of the world without concience or social responsibility, a piss-take of the morally bankrupt stance adopted by a number of people in this thread.

I thought it was a cheap attempt to scores points with a 'clever' analogy, without actually commenting on any of the points I made - though I'll take your word for it.

You want my rules? Interest rates in line with High Street lending, tigher control over lending/ability to repay, abolish ability to repay loans using credit cards and an end to normalising dependance on debt by banning the advertising of loans on childrens' television.

You know the risk with smoking, you may choose to smoke (if you are that dim) but we don't advertise fags to kids. We don't do it because it displayed an abject lack of moral fibre to do so.

How quickly we seem to forget the ramifications of letting a profit-focussed loan market wander society lacking coherent control.

You need to appreciate that people who use services like these do so because they can not get a high street loan and as such they are high risk borrowers. Companies like Quick Quid specifically target this market of high risk borrowers and as such they cover their back with ridiculous APRs. It would quite simply not be possible for Quick Quid to give loans on a high street APR, and I trust you understand that.

I think you have a point about the credit card repayment - can't see a scenario where that could ever be a good thing.

Payday advances, if used correctly, can be a beneficial thing. Smoking always causes physical detriment. Can't really see the comparison there...

We seem to be going over the same ground here so maybe we should agree to disagree.

There you go, wrong again - but believe what you want, I'm not trying to convert you.

Every cab checked in a late-night taxi sting was found to have a defect.

In total, 11 Hackney carriages and private hire taxis were stopped in Ashby and Coalville in a joint operation involving enforcement officers from North West Leicestershire District Council, the police and Vehicle and Operators Services Agency (Vosa) officials.

Defects included bald tyres, worn brakes, oil leaks, power steering fluid leaks, broken brake lights and panel damage.

One taxi plate was found to have expired.

Four vehicles will have to be re-examined by council-approved mechanics and proof provided that repairs have been made to the remainder before the driver is allowed to work again.

Councillor Alison Smith, the council's environment spokesman, said: "Disappointingly, all 11 vehicles examined were found to be defective.

"We are considering introducing a charge of £65 for the re-examination of a vehicle in the hope this will send a strong message to taxi drivers that it is not acceptable to carry passengers in a vehicle that's unfit to be on the road."

The operation took place on December 12.

Inspector Chris Brown, north west Leicestershire police commander, said: "Passengers should be able to get into a taxi knowing that it is roadworthy and driven by someone who has a licence – otherwise there could be problems with insurance.

"We will continue to work to target unlicensed and unsafe taxis."

The council has said that kerbside inspections are also being stepped up over Christmas and New Year.

Imagine what condition they'd be in if there weren't laws to protect us. :dunno:

Over 2000%? Anyone who is stupid enough to sign up and pay interest on something like that deserves whats coming to them.

Do they really though? What if it was a cousin or aunt who's a bit dim, is that what you'd tell them when they rang up asking for a place to stay because they'd had everything they owned repossessed?

They're advertising on Sky Sports News now - you can even get 25% off with a promotional code!

Happy Christmas.

Harsh.

It's not always stupidity that drives people here, it's desperation that does it. Anyone with functioning grey matter knows that 2000% APR is an almighty piss-take, it's just that Quick Quid are exploiting them.

Think everyone has kind of made their point on this now though and the thread is in danger of going in circles.

The terms are there for all to see. Preying on the vulnerable and targetting them is wrong, if that is what you are trying to say then I agree. To some extent these companies do that to people who don't know better and I agree that is disgraceful. There are some people out there who probably shouldn't be in charge of their own finances for whatever reasons, but anyone who is and should be capable of controlling them sensibly, deserves everything they get if they sign up to something like that.

There are a lot of people who should know better, get into huge amounts of debt that they can't afford to pay, that sign up to these sorts of things. That was all I was trying to say.

the solution to this is very simple

all the people that are outraged at these firms should set up a business and pool their life savings and just give out unsecured loans at low rates to anyone who can't get credit anywhere else

there looks to be a niche in the market here

simples

i think you would soon end up with a small fortune (providing of course that you start with a large one)
