Finnegan Posted 11 January 2010 Posted 11 January 2010 Link doesn't work. Forum's crashed because of overload I imagine. . I don't understand betting slips so I could be slightly wrong but I think the general gist is that someone read their betting odds wrong, put £4400 on Angola to win when they were 4 - 0 up thinking he'd get a massive return but actually it was only worth £44 and then they went and drew anyway. Something to do with the difference between decimal odds and standard 2/1 odds. Oh. And he's a student and now has no money.

No, I don't think he expected big returns, I mean no high street bookie would give you odds at 4-0. What happened was he used betfair which is where people bet against each other and he put a large amount on thinking he would get a guaranteed return knowing full well it would be a small return but thought the game was set and match. It's pure greed basically. It's called a 1.01 gubbing in the betting world. I believe there were four in one day yesterday, the Hamilton V Rangers game being one as Rangers were 2-0 up but then went in 3-2 down at the break.
samlcfc Posted 11 January 2010 Posted 11 January 2010 what a deeeeerkhead If it makes you feel better i lost £1 because Ac beat Juve. haha

Aaaaah right, that's what they meant by the 1.01 comment. I presumed he'd just got his maths backwards. That makes a bit more sense, fair play. Like I say - I know fuck all about betting other than I'm shit at it!

He thought he was getting £440 rather than £44 because he was an idiot that couldn't work out decimals.

Asha Posted 11 January 2010 Posted 11 January 2010 Holy Shitballs!I wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry had I done the same, but I'd have a wank while I thought about it. A pity wank.

Yeah I read that, but still £440 is a crap return for £4400 stake. I know they were 4-0 up but still that's a huge risk. How could he get it wrong though? Betfair works everything out for you before you place the bet unless he rushed it.
Jimothy Posted 11 January 2010 Posted 11 January 2010 Reminds of one a few years back when a bloke put about £8000, or it might have been £32000 for some reason those are the two figures in my head, on Arsenal to beat Bolton at the Reebok with the score at 0-2 with 10 minutes left. Bolton came back and scored twice. Even better it was a Keown own goal!!!

It wasn't a huge risk in my opinion yes a huge outlay for minimal profit but thats what sure fire things are....10 minutes to go 4-0 and not to win. Absolutely ridiculous. Theres alot of people who do it and earn off it, if someoned asked me the question before in his shoes I'd probably have considered it, this dude is just simply one of the unluckiest people alive, still least he has his health. I'd like to know the winners betting the other way, because for him to finds those odds there must have been some interest in the draw.Probably people throwing nuggets at it however for 200 odd/1

Yes this is highly unlikely and the guy is extremely unlucky and if I was him I'd send Freddie Kanoute a nice email explaining my plight and request he reimburses me!!

He was definitely extremely unlucky. The reason why I think it's so risky though is down to personal experience. I was 2 grand up on betfair betting this way having started with a kitty of £100 or so. I was doing really well until one day I lost a grand of it on silly last minute goals on some greek game and a Man Utd 7th minute injury time equaliser. The bets I were placing were much higher odds but the return was still small for the stakes I was putting on. Well I thought I was untouchable until that disastrous day hence why I class those bets as risky having been in that position. I was one of the lucky ones though. It felt like I'd lost a lot of my own money but was still a grand or so up profit wise. I withdrew it all in one go and have never placed a bet since. Luckily I quit whilst I was ahead. I was still angry as I could've had a grand more in my pocket but at the same time could've been a lot worst and it could've easily been me in that guys position. At least it taught me gambling is for mugs. Nothing wrong with a few quid on an accumulator for fun though.
Unabomber Posted 12 January 2010 Posted 12 January 2010 He should have at least put some money on the draw. One site was offering 999/1
samlcfc Posted 12 January 2010 Posted 12 January 2010 Was talking to mate at work and apparently the lad that posted confirmed that he was just joking, He was having a laugh with his mate to see how much attention he could get. He said the sun phoned him about buying his story haha
