RizLCFC Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 I've not said anything against Nigel so far in his time at City but now I feel he could be on the verge of making a couple of big mistakes. Firstly, we barely have wingers capable of playing regular first team football and selling Max Gradel to Leeds, whether it's permanent or on loan till the end of the season would be a big mistake. He's got pace and talent and is still developing, he could become a terrific player in the future. We have two decent left wingers in Lloyd Dyer and Danny N'Guessan and Nicky Adams has also played on the left in the past, but we haven't got an out and out right winger and neither Matt Oakley or Paul Gallagher have shown they are capable of playing in that position, that leaves Gradel. And secondly, it's great to see that he believes in our current squad and so do I but I feel he needs to sign a couple of good players preferably on loan as it's difficult to sign real quality in this January window. If he sells Gradel, then we need a right winger and I feel we also need a defender, don't mind whether he plays in the middle or either side. But, Pearson has said there will be little activity in the current window at City which is a shame.

Our mistakes of the past were were in part (as well as changing manager) changing our entire team every sumer and buying 5 new players in January. As regards to Pearson making mistakes, I have often wondered about many of his decisions (such as subs, Tony Warner coming etc) but he seems to get them right. So much so I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. And if all goes wrong we'll have to emergency loan a few players.
Guest Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 I wasn't aware it was in his remit to be infallible. Clearly I am not a true City fan

Obviously the main floors here are that Danny N'Guessan the "decent left winger" is actually a right winger. It could also be argued Gradel himself is not "capable of playing regular first team football" at this level, considering he doesn't even get in Leeds first 11.

Or Leeds could be using him sparingly so as to keep his price down. It's no secret that they want this guy who you say can't get into their team and that the Leeds fans seem to love him. With the price mentioned as £200,000 I'd say Leeds seem to be working the situation very nicely.
Babylon Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 Or Leeds could be using him as sparingly so as to keep his price down. Yeah righteooooooo.
Thracian Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 Yeah righteooooooo. Why not? The guy's shown himself to be a good impact player and Leeds really don't need to involve him any more. Their promotion is already virtually assured.
RizLCFC Posted 14 January 2010 Author Posted 14 January 2010 A £200,000 price tag is just rediculous as for N'Guessan he's played his best game in a City shirt in my opinion on the left v QPR away. Gradel may not be a regular first team player if he returned to City but we haven't got an Ashley Young or a Ronaldo to play out wide so I would rather Nigel make sure we have Gradel as an option on the bench then play Oakley or Gallagher wide right.
Edmund Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 Or Leeds could be using him sparingly so as to keep his price down. My thoughts exactly.
Babylon Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 My thoughts exactly. Why play him at all? Why start him in the games he has started? If so sure of his ability why not buy him in the summer? It's nonsense IMO.
Edmund Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 Why play him at all? Why start him in the games he has started? If so sure of his ability why not buy him in the summer? It's nonsense IMO. You only have to look at his track record at Leeds to realise they are saving him. I believe it's not only to drive the price down but to stop fellow competitors going in for him. In his first couple of appearances he made such an impact he had already become a fans favourite. Fans were calling for him to be signed up. Ever since then he has been restricted a lot more. Like thracian said they have virtually secured promotion so playing him for the full 90 minutes wasn't necessary and would only drive his price up and probably attract more attention from other clubs.
Thracian Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 Why play him at all? Why start him in the games he has started? If so sure of his ability why not buy him in the summer? It's nonsense IMO. Not at all. The time has been quietly and sensibly used to get him used to Leeds' system of play and the team-mates he'll have around him. by the time Leeds are in The Championship he'll have been fully integrated. Perfect man management all round and the least pressured introduction to a demanding set of fans that anyone could wish for.
Babylon Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 He hasn't been restricted since his first few games at all. He had a few good cameos as a sub and has been getting the same most games. In fact he's probably had more pitch time since his cameos because he has started a few games. Those went unnoticed by most because he was shit and there wasn't the usual gradel wank fest. Sorry I won't be convinced.
Thracian Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 Sorry I won't be convinced. I for one never imagined you would be! It would take something akin to a character transplant.

You only have to read the Gradel to Leeds thread on Waccoe to know that your talking bullshine. The general consensus is that they want to sign the lad up permanently and are saying that 200k is a steal. If he was so shit wouldn't they be opposed to buying him? Either way, Grayson has been very clever in deploying him. How a player of his quality could even be considered to leave for as little as 200k is beyond me.

I'd wager now he won't be first choice on the right if snodgrass is still there. It's nothing to do with good management, they just already have a better player.

How a player of his quality could even be considered to leave for as little as 200k is beyond me. Firstly I never said he was shit, I said he was shit in the games he started. Which go unnoticed on here by all the reactionaries. Obviously went unnoticed to you because you thought they'd used him less since his first two great cameos as a sub. I suggest you go back to waccoe and do some research. I would go on there after EVERY Leeds game and see what they said. Every game he started he got poor/average reviews... "better coming on late on", "can't cross", "inconsistent", "not a 90 minute player", "no more than a super sub" comments are regular. Very similar to what we all said about him last year. Yes they like him and want to sign him, but the same worries we had about him are also there. So I'm not talking bull shit. 200k is a silly price I agree, what can you buy for that these days? Unless there are lots of add ons and sell on clauses it's ridiculously cheap.
Fox You Forest Posted 14 January 2010 Posted 14 January 2010 Doesn't Snodgrass play on the right for Leeds? he's a more than decent player which could be the reason why Gradel hasn't been playing.

I'd wager now he won't be first choice on the right if snodgrass is still there. It's nothing to do with good management, they just already have a better player. I cannot see that what they do next season will necessarily have any bearing on their approach this season. Gradel has been a loanee and might well have expected to play second fiddle to an established player while he gets properly integrated at Leeds in any case. After that it may well be down to form but if Snodgrass plays well and Gradel continues to make his mark as a second-half replacement (which may well show him in his best light during his developing years as a professional) then why would the manager need to change that? In many ways I think that is the way we should have used him, though with much more freedom to move from one flank to another and even inside providing other players were aware enough to provide width in his absence.
