Ford Super Sunday Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 Since the collapse of Setanta, the IPL did not have a broadcasting home in the UK, however, ITV have picked up the rights and will show the tournament on ITV4 Cricket is to return to free-to-air television after the Indian Premier League agreed a deal with ITVThe channel has broken into the cricket market for the first time since the 1970s after signing a deal to show the third IPL season, which starts in Mumbai on March 12, Telegraph Sport can reveal. A total of 59 of 60 matches over 45 days will be broadcast on ITV4, which is available on freeview, with the live world feed supplied by Sony and ITV employing their own studio experts. Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, said: "This is a hugely significant deal for the IPL and ideally suited to the British passion for both cricket and entertainment." The IPL will also be shown live on YouTube giving it a potentially large market audience and the potential to reach a bigger part of the British population than domestic county cricket or even matches involving the England team, which are shown on satellite broadcaster Sky. It is thought ITV paid a nominal sum to screen the IPL which was without a UK broadcaster following the collapse of Setanta last year. Linkypoo Fantastic bit of business by ITV. A 'nominal' fee will be tiny, considering Setanta paid £5m for a five year deal when it started, i'd be surprised if they even paid £1m for this tournament, and to think of the income they'll get from advertising revenues, a profit will be made.
Fosse Boy Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 Cricket on ITV. Wonder who their "expert" panel will be. Just a shame that it's overseas cricket rather than domestic games or England internationals that have found their way back on to free-to-air TV.

Ford Super Sunday Posted 4 March 2010 Author Posted 4 March 2010 To be fair, it can't be as hilarious as the BBC using a former runner, a former Canadian Winter Olympic medalist and a rower analysing one of the most significant Ice hockey matches in the history of the game.

Valid point, but I'd still back ITV to come up with a worse line up. I'm gonna pump for Charles Dagnall, Phil Tufnell and Ian Wright in the studio with Paddy McGuinness presenting. Clive "I love using cricket analogies during football matches" Tyldesley and Piers Morgan in the commentary box.
Dickie Greenleaf Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 ITV will balls it up like they do with evey other sporting event for which they manage to scrape two-bob together.
Dickie Greenleaf Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 Despite it being a different sport they will somehow manage to fit in a reference to "that night in Istanbul" every show.
Fox You Forest Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 How many overs in between adverts? my guess is three.
Brainy Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 Hopefully will be kept well away from it. ITV have already said that Matt Smith will not be part of this years final line up.

Guest Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 My worst fear is that they look at some of the old C4 presenting team and bring back Dermot Reeve.
Corky Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 My worst fear is that they look at some of the old C4 presenting team and bring back Dermot Reeve. Get him back
Fox You Forest Posted 4 March 2010 Posted 4 March 2010 Not for IPL though surely, can he keep up with the pace? Anybody but Mark Nicholas can't stand him, smug ****.
Fosse Boy Posted 5 March 2010 Posted 5 March 2010 My worst fear is that they look at some of the old C4 presenting team and bring back Dermot Reeve. I once saw him outside the Lord's media centre holding two guitars. Odd. Not for IPL though surely, can he keep up with the pace? Anybody but Mark Nicholas can't stand him, smug ****. So sexy.
