Leicesterboi Posted 16 May 2005 Posted 16 May 2005 I myself am a fan of Connolly but i do believe we seem to be pinning too much hope on him for next season. i think he will score more next term but not enough to get us in title challenging areas of the table. Players like Mcsheffrey are being mentioned so should we REPLACE connolly or find a man to play along side him?

Before Connolly came to Leicester his goalscoring rate was 1 in every 2 games so I am confident he will produce the goods next season, as a fellow Leicester fan you should be encouraging Connolly not doubting his ability. I bet you are one of the first people to criticise players at matches and if so you're not the sort of fan we need! Next season we need the fans to be the 12th man so please support Connolly even if he does'nt score for the first few matches, lets stick behind him and give him the support he deserves!

He is but he hasnt had a too bad scoring record this season. 14 goals?? perhaps not the best, but look at the team last season. All of them had never played with each other, at the end of the season we started to see more of connolly. He will improve but it wouldnt hurt to get in a better stiker if that is what CL thinks is best. I personally think we need a new striker, some one young and quick.

I agree with you that at the end of the season we saw more of Connolly and this was maybe becuase the team has gelled together. Who knows!!!
lweston Posted 17 May 2005 Posted 17 May 2005 David connolly scored 7 goals in his last 12 games at the end of last season for city, so how can you question weather we should have him or not. i do agree that we need to find somebody who can play with him because de vries is certainly not up to the task, i don't think Mcsheffrey is the answer because he is basically the same player as Connolly, we need someone who can hold the ball up for him and get knock downs then i beleive that we will see the best of David Connolly.

His good form seemed to co-incide with Stefan Moore's arrival, Connors probably knew it was unlikely that they'd play alongside each other and so he upped his game. He'd still be first choice for me though. If Dion accepts the new contract offer then i can't see Craig getting another target man type in, with de Vries meant to be another one in that mould.

I would suggest that there is a 50% chance connely will produce the goods and about 10% chance of MDV performing, and if city leave it till next season to find out then it will be to late and we will be back where we are now. We need a quality player that CL can build the team around and that player has to be a proven goal scorer. Not a wait and see scorer. It is just not worth the risk

It is just not worth the risk 110431[/snapback] I think your being abit harsh on Connolly. His end to the season has shown that he is more than capable of doing the business here. He finished on 14 goals, which isn't brilliant but isn't that bad either. What we need is another striker who will potentially score 15-20 goals aswell. Connolly scored 7 goals in his last 11 games, which indicates that his form has picked up and he's ready to fire in 20+ goals next season. I think if a player ends the season on a run that would average 28 goals in 44 matches over a season should be given next another chance. I also think that the chances of him succeeding next season are more than 50%, I mean if he'd scored 6 more goals which he easily could have done he'd only be 4 off the top scorer for the championship. All hypothetical of course, but with his record before he came here and a poor season by his standards this season he's never going to be far off 20 goals a season as he's that type of striker. I challenge you to find us a better striker than Connolly within our financial constraints, who's still in his 20's, played 40+ games at international level and scored well over 100 goals in his career which average about a goal every 2.5 matches.
