smudgerfox Posted 21 August 2010 Posted 21 August 2010 1 We're attempting a 180 degree turn in playing style (from safe, economic, productive to something less familiar and less results-oriented) in a matter of weeks 2 We haven't played the strongest sides as some suggest we've played one club that spent alot of money close season and another that was relegated and didn't lose too many players and which therefore were rated by the media as likely to be promotion favourites. Truth is there are hardly any obviously poor teams this season so the idea that things will get easy when the whipping boys crop up in the fixture list is just nonsense (Palace for instance were universally predicted for relegation) 3 The MOF will want to prove to his new friends that he's an exciting and decisive leader which means we should anticipate more headline-grabbing activity which may have no connection with the long term health of LCFC 4 The players - you could imagine them being sceptical about the need for a change of style when we were so close to promotion last season. They needed some positive results to erase those doubts and they simply haven't got them.
Webbo Posted 21 August 2010 Posted 21 August 2010 Couldn't this have been put in one of the other threads?
Stand UP... Posted 21 August 2010 Posted 21 August 2010 the only thing worrying me with the club is the culling of the sports science program which has been mentioned many times. may just be a coincedence that weale got injured during the match and dyer, fryatt got injured before it.
Edmund Posted 21 August 2010 Posted 21 August 2010 Have we actually got rid of the sports science dept? As far as I'm aware, Loughborough Uni work in tandem with LCFC. There's no article suggesting that the link has been cut unless I've missed something.
rico Posted 21 August 2010 Posted 21 August 2010 5 ; the fans are revolting i don't think we're that bad !
Guest Posted 21 August 2010 Posted 21 August 2010 Only part 3? I felt sure by this time we'd have an entire Encyclopedia Brittanica's worth of moanings
Callabinho Posted 22 August 2010 Posted 22 August 2010 It was like watching actual crap waste of money, at least we carried one aspect of the boro game across to this one.....we didn't score!

There's no article suggesting that the link has been cut unless I've missed something. I've not heard anything to suggest otherwise. The training issue does seem like it's becoming a problem despite me previously thinking otherwise. There are a number of possible reasons for this that may be of concern. Firstly the late appointment of Paulo Sousa left him with the dilemma of whether or not to focus on fitness or coaching. The reality of the situation is that given the date of his appointment he was never going to be able to focus on both areas to the degree necessary to have the squad fully prepared for the new season. The blame for this lies with the board I'm afraid, as they should have been quicker to appoint Sousa if that was their intention, or at least released Pearson sooner so that they could have got the guys from Loughborough Uni working on the teams fitness in preparation for the new manager. Another problem affecting the team is that following recent comments from some of the players concerning training, Sousa doesn't seem focused on conditioning. Richie Wellens mentioned on a RL interview last week that Sousa insists players get involved in the training drills and ball work but if they wish to train in the gym it is at the players own discretion. One could make the assumption that players would conduct themselves in a professional manner and keep themselves physically fit in-order to keep their place in the team, but I'm sure for many of the lads they probably see it as a chore especially following a morning session out on the pitch. Furthermore, despite these guys following training plans I'm sure many of them wouldn't know where to start when it comes to formulating a periodised plan to see them compete successfully throughout the full season whilst minimising the risk of injury. Subsequently, this possible lack of conditioning may be the reason why now they are picking up all of these minor injuries, as their flexibility and core conditioning programmes were poor pre-season. Finally, I think the way we approach flexibility programmes in this country is quite different to the way most European countries approach it. In the UK we tend to prefer Static, Dynamic and PNF stretching as they are very good at increasing flexibility within the individuals capability whilst minising risk. Despite this, most European countries favour Balastic Stretching which can involve significant risk if not performed correctly. Assuming Paulo or most likely Bruno have changed the players flexibility programmes then the players bodies may not have adapted and this may be the cause of the injury problems we are currently experiencing. My only concern is that if things don't work out with Paulo at the helm and a new manager is appointed who feels that the players fitness is lacking it will most likely take 3 months to get them up to speed which is a long while in the context of a season.
lcfc_sam_p Posted 22 August 2010 Posted 22 August 2010 Your point about Palace being tipped for relegation..Well before they got points deducted last season they were only 2 points behind us. Palace IS a tough place to go. I'd fully expect to beat them at home but going away to any team in this league will be hard, so you cant expect to just pick up results because they were tipped for relegation. Blackpool were tipped for relegation last year. Burnley and Boro are probably the 2 strongest teams in the league IMO. Might have to throw Cardiff in there aswel. Man United got beat at Burnley..

My point about Palace being tipped for relegation isn't that I think they deserve to be. My point is that there are few obvious tips for relegation this season which means clubs like that do get tipped. And that's a danger for us - if this promising exciting new style of play doesn't deliver bread-and-butter results we could stay nearer the bottom than the top. I know it's early days but so far the only league result we've managed is a goalless draw at home against a team tipped for promotion but still mis-firing. Heaven knows Burnley had one season in the Premiership but they're hardly world-beaters and they thrashed us and their manager thinks they should play much better!! Now we're relying on new signings to make the difference. It's a world away from the boring but dependable stability provided by NFP and in my view a highly risky enterprise..
