davieG Posted 7 January 2011 Author Posted 7 January 2011 I wasn't having a pop at you, davieG. And the answer to your question is because Saints and Tigers will soon be the only decent sides left in England if clubs stay 'within their means.' Sports are fragile ecosystems. You have to remember that pro rugby union is still an embryo compared to football and even Rugby League. Fair enough perhaps I was feel extra sensitive. The problem is chasing money doesn't solve the root causes all it does is provide a temporary reprieve until wages rise again. As for losing players abroad then International Ruling body should ensure, in the overall interests in Rugby a level playing field. I've no issue with making rugby a global game and spreading the word. As I say my main gripe is that it's 'for the fans' it's not it's to provide players with more money than most fans can conceive of.
Finnegan Posted 7 January 2011 Posted 7 January 2011 I don't have updated numbers, I can look later, but I'm pretty sure I read the average wage in the English prem in 2004 was about 60k pa. Obviously that's high but it isn't otherworldly. There are salesmen on that.

Finnegan Posted 7 January 2011 Posted 7 January 2011 Well sure, but that's true in any industry it's just that sport is unfortunately highly competitive on AND off the pitch. We don't really disagree, I just think the job is the IRB's to try and keep an even keel instead of FB and co finger pointing at what they falsely think are super-capitalist owners.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 January 2011 Posted 8 January 2011 This is disappointing for the fans, though less so than it would be for football. I'm not going to make a blanket statement that all rugger fans are toffs (in years gone by, especially when the game was amateur and therefore cheap to attend, I have been to a good many Tigers games, and I'm working class to the bone), but there are certainly higher percentage of upper middle class fans (and richer) for whom this match will be seen as nothing more than a jolly, what-ho! Rugby in the sun? Top show! Me and Petersby and Johnsy off to teach the camel-jockeys* how to play proper sports, hurrah! Of all the clubs too, Wasps and Harlequins are the ones most likely (and this is only from my experiences when I've seen their crowds at Twickers and Welford Road) to have a large proportion of the "more fortunate". *not all rugger fans are racists
Vacamion Posted 8 January 2011 Posted 8 January 2011 jolly, what-ho! Rugby in the sun? Top show! Me and Petersby and Johnsy off to teach the camel-jockeys* how to play proper sports, hurrah! Do all posh people speak like the Beano would depict them speaking?
