Parafox Posted 31 January 2011 Posted 31 January 2011 Has anyone ever changed the rear pads on a Renault Espace (2002 Petrol)? Is it straightforward? Is there anything I should be aware of? Do I need to bleed the system or just open the nipple valve (like in the good old days)? Can't afford ridiculous garage prices! Any advice welcome
Zingari Posted 1 February 2011 Posted 1 February 2011 usually changing disc pads is a very straight forward task and doesn't require any hydraulic fluid bleeding ( just make sure that the master cylinder doesn't overflow when the slave cylinders are pushed back to allow for the thicker new pads )take the master cylinder cap off and put a rag around it it's usually a case of pulling out the retaining pins ( usually held in with split pins ) , prising the cylinders back and fitting the new ones i've never actually done it on an espace , but all the others i've done have been very similar and easy ps make sure hand brake is off and scotch the front wheels before jacking up
Houdini Logic Posted 1 February 2011 Posted 1 February 2011 Should you not be more concerned about the dead hooker in the boot?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 1 February 2011 Posted 1 February 2011 More to the point, why would you want to change the brakes on an Espace, surely you want to crash it?
Jon the Hat Posted 1 February 2011 Posted 1 February 2011 Replacing the brake pads on any car is not very expensive at a local garage. Suggest you get a quote before you start doing it yourself.

Indeed, probably worth it. As the garage probably get the parts at trade price and it's not very labour intensive, it can sometimes work out not that much more, minus the hassle plus the confidence it's been done properly (assuming it's a garage you trust)

I can get local renault specialist to do it for £90... incidentally i would have had to buy a cylinder rewind tool for £45 to do it myself so there really is no ffokin point

Jon the Hat Posted 1 February 2011 Posted 1 February 2011 Brake pads does not require a Renaud specialist, you might save alittle elsewhere.

Thanks Jon, he's a local mech, not a dealership or anything, just French cars are what he works on (sad git). Ringing round in morning (after my night shift... yawn)
Parafox Posted 12 February 2011 Author Posted 12 February 2011 I dont suppose anyones really interested but I had to get this off my chest. I have had the brakes sorted. The cost?... not £90... THREE HUNDRED AND FOOKING FORTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, dont buy a Renault Espace. I had to have discs, pads and cables replaced. Discs and pads I can understand, but the cable is a specialist type and is of crappy design and quality. It has an inner and an outer sleeve with rubber grommets that decay and let water and dirt in. This results in poor handbrake holding and overstretching of the adjusters. Also due to the location (behind the fuel tank) of the only cable bracket that holds it in place on the body of the car, the tank has to be drained and removed. Labour cost me 190 quid. In the past I have had to fork out over £300 to have the reverse gear selector cable replaced because Renault only supply it as a whole part with the gearstick and selector mechanism complete... and no, you can't get it from Joe Bloggs Spares, has to be Renault Parts and it WAS repaired by a local garage. The fooking cable itself which snapped, is the same as a bike brake cable which costs maybe a fiver. Previously the dashboard has had to come off to get to the heater electronics which were faulty caused by a blocked pollen filter (replaced... main dealer ONLY)...£425... Over the 4 years I have had this car I reckon it's cost me around £3500 in garage bills, incl a refurb gearbox!! Cant afford a replacement and I hate the thing. The only redeeming feature is that it's good for getting things home from Ikea and taking stuff to the tip (not neccessarily in the same journey)! AAAARGGHHHH!!!!!!! EDIT: My wife made me buy it I wanted Porsche but I couldnt find a roof rack to fit
