I'd love to give it a try but would probably end up being the same standard as the 'Boro ref :P

Worth giving a go. I qualified last summer, currently do youth football.

It's quite good for me, as I've only just turned 16. £23 a match for a couple of hours on a sunday morning can be quite helpful!

my mate does that!

I'm doing a course in August (I think), according to my mate the pay is going up to £26 a game?

Thinking of giving it a go and taking a course this summer.

Being slightly visually impaired (need to wear glasses for longish distances) i'm already more than half way there.

Yeah the Leicestershire FA has put rates up for County Cup games next season (which'll most likely follow with leagues too)

Will be:

£25 for U11-14

£27 for U15

£30 for U16-18 (and other open-aged until you get to 'better' leagues).

Not bad in my opinion.

Qualified when I was 14, two and a half seasons ago.

Ref most weekends and it's decent, a great way of earning money, ref for 3 or 4 hours a weekend and you can rake in 60+ quid.

And I like the controversy of it, :D

Just done the Basic Course, will be doing my first few games after Easter hopefully.

The "exam" at the end of the course was laughable, pretty much everyone just mutually copying each other, and it took place in a room next-door to some kind of exercise class so the sounds of the music and instructor were booming through the whole time!

Been a referee for over five years and I really enjoy it :)

I also referee Futsal and I'm on the National List of Futsal referees, so that's not bad either!

Very rewarding. Develops you as a person and builds confidence. Also gets you a fair few quid each weekend

DB11 & Sam - Do you have your games booked up weeks in advance? Or does the club contact you the week before? Just wondering due to being in the process of setting a club up. Cheers

I know in Youth Leagues there's a Referee's Secretary who appoints all the referee's to each fixture. And once this is done, its the responsibility of the home club to send confirmation (usually by email) to the appointed referee a few days before.

League rules will stipulate that you must contact the assigned match referee three days before the fixture (this means Wednesday nights for Sunday games). Usually by email or a phone call / text - I used to receive letters but only one club (Quorn) still do this; the rest are by email.

I'm appointed to games by the league referee secretary or appointments officer weeks in advance. If I don't have a game for whatever reason then if I phone up there's normally one spare somewhere that I can pick up so yes sometimes I pick up games really late and so the only confirmation I recieve is off of the referee's secretary telling me where to go!

How to you get from Sunday league to refereeing in the football league?

I think it's like a promotion pyramid.

You start off at Level 9 (after qualifying).

You then have to do six 11-a-side games as a 'probation' period. Once these are done and you've returned your form you become either:

a Level 8 Referee: (if you under 16)

or a Level 7 Referee (if your 16+. Automatically go up to Level 7 on 16th Bday I think)

More details can be found here: http://www.footballreferee.org/promotion_structure.php

If anyone wants to play add your name.

I honestly would, but I've already got an appointment for the morning, then I could be off up to Holmes Park for the afternoon! Busy time this!

To go up through the ranks, you would need to apply for promotion after meeting the criteria (I have a list of things somewhere but I cant be bothered to fetch it)

And you do go automatically up to L7 on your 16th Birthday.

I'm a level 7 having never applied for promotion. I've applied for it for this coming season though.
