everyone knows all conspiracy theories are created by the government & conspiracy theory website run by the government.

Conspiracies make up about 25% of the information they put out since about 1/4 of voters are idiots and will believe the conspiracies and that their governments are all powerful and can pull off a "terrorist attack" of such a grandiose scale. The other 75% are told the truth.

(i may have just been watching south park).

Read a book on holiday called Voodoo Histories by David Aaronovitch.

Picks apart 15 or so of the most widely held conspiracy theories, and explains how their very existence has changed the world (often for the worst).

Excellent read, definitely recommended for El Empty.

In 2003 the political commentator David Aaronovitch wrote these words on the Iraq war and the search for the weapons of mass destruction supposedly held by the regime:

“If nothing is eventually found, I – as a supporter of the war – will never believe another thing that I am told by our government or that of the US ever again.

is this the same David Aaronovitch ?

Well just remember , "fool me once" and all that David !!!

The irony of his scoffing is that, in the light of his own unrepentant taking to task of certain elements of those that questioned the need to go to war in Iraq, he ascribes paranoia to those who realised, from day one, that the government was lying to us.

This is the idea that eludes him and the book. 9/11 and 7/7 truthers are not privy to a hidden truth, but nor are they insane.

They are merely desperate to bring accountability to governments that they correctly perceive as revelling in an unpalatable art of deception.

The fact that Britain is entering a new low in distrust of parliamentary democracy underlines the reasons why conspiracy theories emerge.

Aaronovitch’s book is nothing more than a perfect mirror for the methods they use. He is trying to brush his own acceptance of an official lie under the carpet by targeting those who don’t.

edit;

I was quite convinced that he had indeed debunked some conspiracy theories until i read about the two that I actually know something about and reallised he did not have a grasp on the facts and implications .

It was then that I became suspicious of the whole book.

But maybe that's the trick , lump 'em all together in one big bonfire of conspiracy theories so that the true ones go the same way as the loopy ones ,

It really isn't that much of a complicated trick is it ?

Didn't know that, to be fair.

Nonetheless it's as good of a summary as you can possibly expect of 100 years of conspiracy theories.

As you say, it's a mirror for conspiracy theories. But it seems like so much of the information you read comes from the conspiracy theory side, it's nice to have a different perspective. He does appear to have as much of a blind acceptance of the official version of events as others have of the unofficial version. Anybody who's skeptical of the official version of events should read it, if only to broaden their perspective. I thought he did a particularly good job on David Kelly's death, which was something that I was particularly unsure of before.
