What would you say is Leicester's all star team, ranging from the likes of Peter Shilton to striker Emile Heskey. ???

And, also, choose a manager for the team.

Since I'm only 19 I can't say I know a lot about the players we had pre 1990's, but on what I've been told and the acclaim they've recieved this would be my team;

Shilton

Kaamark

Walsh

Elliott

Nish*

Weller

Lennon

Izzet

Guppy

Lineker

Claridge

Subs:

Flowers

Taggart

Parker

Speedie

Cottee

Manager: Martin 'the great' O'Neill

* I think if Thatcher had stayed could have been legendary

only from players i've seen play for LCFC in a rather experimental 2-3-2-3 formation:

This'll raise a few eyebrows but what a side!

Playing in the old fashioned 2-3-5 formation (not that it would matter a lot) I'd go:

Shilton (with Banks as goalkeeper sub).

Kaamark and Heskey as overlapping full-backs.

Frank McLintock, Ian King and Colin Appleton with Steve Walsh as defensive sub.

Weller, Lineker, Worthington, Davie Gibson and Mike Stringfellow. Derek Dougan, Andy Lochhead and Steve Guppy would be the forward subs although doubtless I've forgotten some worthy challengers to these.

Believe me Davie Gibson was by miles and miles and miles the best number 10 ever to wear a City shirt. Issett was a great, skillful and committed servant but you youngsters missed a rare and real treat by never seeing Gibbo.

Heskey was the only problem. But, as was stated elsewhere in the thread, City have struggled for left backs and I truly believe Heskey (who will turn out a better defender than attacker,(probably at centre-back) would still be a handful at full-back both in defence and attack and better in my mind than anyone else, especially in this attack-minded side.

Worthington was the only player I ever saw at City who could even approach Gibbo's ball-playing skills and much as I'd love to find a first team place for Walshie, Ian King

was sheer class against anyone...Rio Ferdinand without the baggage.

Not only did he stroll about breaking up even the most imaginative attacks, it was hard to remember him ever giving the ball away afterwards. Mr Cool with capitals.

The manager? MON did wonders at City but although the team's never say die, Foxes never quit heroics made em a great bunch to watch they were never entertainers in the way Real Madrid (of Di Stafano days) or Man Utd (of Best and Charlton days) invariably were.

City in Matt Gillies times were not just winners, they were absolutely brilliant on the eye. Whether it was Liverpool, United or anyone else, City's football won everyone's respect and mere mortals like Manchester City (top flight in those days) got an 8-4 hammering at our place and 4-2 away, with other top sides like Burnley (6-0 I think) and Sunderland shipping bucketloads of goals too.

Whoever posted this thread, thanks for bringing such wonderful memories back to life...days of 42,000 crowds, being passed over the heads of grown ups to sit on the running track around the pitch and exhibitions of marauding five and six goals-a-game football.

Score-and-sit-on-it tactics would never have crossed the minds of the City team outlined here.

Thanks for that, you've saved me an awful amount of time, what can I say but spot on

Goalkeeper - Gordon Banks

Full Backs - Steve Whitworth and Dennis Rofe

Centre Backs - Matt Elliott and Frank McLintock

Midfield - Keith Weller, Muzzy Izzet, David Gibson and Lennie Glover (no holding midfielder but what the hell!)

Strikers - Garry Lineker and Allan Clarke

Manager - Jimmy Bloomfield

- the Premiership would be a doddle with this team (IF ONLY)

I've been a city fan since I was 8, I'm 21 now and didn't know half of what you wrote before. Great post , I'd have loved to have seen some of the late great city players :)

I remember his first game. He broke his leg didn't he? Well just before he was sent off (subbed as injury) it was one of if not his first touch of the ball and he was more or less at the half way line (near the subs bench at Filbo) .. the ball came to him and he pelted it, sending it just over the goal infront of the south stand. That ball had sheer power and pace on it we were all like :o:)

What a pity about Collymore. I remember that game in MON days when he whacked a magnificent hat-trick against Sunderland and honestly believed he had found the right club with the right manager to bring out the best in him.

Maybe if we could have played all our League matches on the car park ...

Anyway, like so many before him and doubtless to come, it was like wasting an outstanding case of wine.

Somehow, to be a legend who's remembered and respected for all time, you've got to love the game more than yourself and more than anything else.

It's a motto for life in my view for anyone aspiring to greatness - in any field.

Most fans probably wish they could forget his time with us too!
