Telephone Scam or Not?

With that sort of call volume, it'll be debt collection, probably an outside agency working on behalf of Lloyds.

This Gary Cooper scrote has probably given a fake or old number. You'll be on a collections auto dialler. They're hard to get off because people who are genuinely trying to avoid paying things will claim all sorts to fob them off anyway.

Just be as firm as possible, generally it'll need some sort of team leader to remove you from the auto dialler.

I had exactly the same for about 1 year and then thankfully they just stopped. The phone would ring at random times during the day ,sometimes 3 or 4 times and they would ask for a Mr Miller.

I like you davie tried every tact - politeness, rudeness, aggressiveness, calmness, pullyourhairoutness but to no avail. It really is annoying, but I did get a cheap BT portable phone from the supermarket with caller ID and I noticed that it displayed "international" when they rang, so | could start to ignore them and it then stopped after a while.

That sounds like a plan. In addition it would have the advantage of not having to speak to half of my family!! :)

Just say "I'm sorry but Gary past away yesterday" and that should stop it.

Funny you should mention this - just this weekend my friend told me a story similar to this.

He moved house about a year ago and didn't pay or tell his credit card company, so they began calling him at work. Despite getting very angry they still kept calling, so when one time his colleague answered and told him who it was, he told him to say he was dead.

He went round his parents house last weekend and his Mum asked why she had a letter from Capital One consoling her about the loss of her son and asking for her to send a copy of the death certificate. You'd hope it'd stop at that but the company said as soon as they have proof he was dead they'd be in touch to arrange a payment plan with the parents, only two weeks after they'd just lost their son! Unbelievable.

I guess in terms of what's happening to you - if they are chasing him and his debt and you say he's dead, then they'll at least leave you alone and go after his parents who will hopefully give them his details (if this is actually the case).
