Telephone Scam or Not?

For the last couple of months I've been getting unsolicited calls from what they say is LloydsTSB on this number 01273 743 574. I've never had a Lloyds TSB account.

These calls have increased from one a day to four. I'm on the register for stopping unsolicited calls and this is the only one I now get.

Each time they call they ask for Gary Cooper, I've tried the polite response informing them that no such person lives in my house, I've tried the angry approach, the threatening approach and I've tried talking to them to find out what they actually want. I only ever get as far as them asking for the last for digits of my phone number which I obviously refuse to do, suspecting that this is part of some scam.

This is getting extremely irritating, I've looked at the options from my service provider and all they offer is call barring at £3.50 a month which is about as much as I spend on land line calls and frankly I refuse to pay it as I believe it should be a free option.

I've checked this number on google and there are several forums where it is obvious many people are getting these calls and some go back to 2007 yet nothing seems to have been done to stop them. It would seem like if it is genuine it's their credit card centre.

Anyone else suffer from this or know anyone that does, any solutions on how to stop them would also be welcome.

If it was genuine and you asked them to stop, then I'm sure that they would have to stop calling you. No harm in calling Leicestershire Police (0116 222222) if you don't know what else to do. 4 times a day is ridiculous.

Thanks for your reply, yes it is ridiculous but I'd be reluctant to involve the police, in spite of my frustrations I feel they've got more important things to deal with. Mind you I might think differently in a week or two if they continue and or get more frequent.

I used to get a lot of calls from people claiming to be friends with someone next door but one to me asking if I knew their number. It always struck me as strange that they didn't know their friends number but they knew my number, a total stranger.

Slightly knowing the chap next door but one, I suspect that they were debt collectors. I just used to put the phone down on them.

Tell him you are Gary Cooper and challenge him to a gunfight at High Noon , and start whistling " do not forsake me oh my darling "

laugh.gif Funny you should say because I did start singing that to the woman who takes turns with the guy to ring up - she put the phone down, perhaps it was my poor singing.

Start calling them back twice as many times as they ring you, see how they like it. Pretty sure Dom Joly did that on a consumer programme.

I think there are other channels you can contact if you don't want to go straight to the police though.

We had it with someone ringing claiming they were from Microsoft. Telling them I only use a Mac didn't perturb them.

I was think of that. Ring them then hang up or say 'This is an automated message to hear further options pres one.' then hang up.

If you don't receive or expect other calls when they ring just leave the reciever off and turn the TV or radio up see how long they want to listen to Corrie or Eastenders.

We get them many a time despite blocking a few of them in the past, many agencies. We normally shut the phone on them, as well as recorded calls and from call centres located outside the UK.

Just shut the phone on them, that's the best you can do. Don't know whether calling the Police will do more good them bad, what would they do? Do they have the authority to stop these calls or is it out of their hands?

Putting the phone down on them makes not a jot of difference they still keep ringing and as I say it's getting more frequent. As for ignoring the call I've tried that and missed important calls because of it. I've tried plenty of types of retaliation including loud noises, ignoring them, leaving them hanging but they just put the phone down and ring later as if it's the first time they've ever called.

I'm in the process of getting a number display phone but that still means stopping what you're doing to see who it is.

just bite the bullet and call the police, at best its just a pain phone call at worst its an attempt at fraud, either way its a crime

Paying the £3.50 worked for me or there is another option to bar callers who don't send out their number which helped us but won't help you if the number is showing.

We received calls every night at 7pm from an offshore call centre asking for a Mr Cave (not me) and quoting and incorrect address although the address they quoted was Bagworth Road and we do live in Bagworth. I have the feeling it was a debt recovery agency but it wasn't a predictive dialler as it was the same chap each night. He refused to believe I wasn't Mr Cave although annoying he was quite pleasant although his english was quite poor.

In the end I put it on loud speaker and handed it to my son who was 3 at the time. It was hilarious to listen to as Joshua would waffle on about not much and all you could hear in pigeon English was oh good - please give phone to Daddy. Mickey Mouse oh yes - please put Daddy again phone... funilly enough after a while he started asking what Daddy's name was to which my son responded - Daddy! Silly!

What I soon realised was that the chap's processes which offshore teams are trained to follow to the letter prevented him from hanging up and tied up his line so I happily left Joshua to talk for a good hour about everything from Cbeebies to how he was now able to poo on the toilet and wipe his own........

The calls didn't stop and Joshua was actually getting quite fond of his 7pm calls although clearly the caller wasn't.

In the end we paid our £3.50 and the calls stopped. Joshua still asks sometimes why the nice man with the funny voice doesn't call him any more.

2nd call of the day received, chatted to the woman who said we were on a list of numbers she has to call, couldn't catch all of it because of the strong accent but I ended up saying that I had informed the police and they were treating it as harassment and were in the process of investigating. I doubt it will stop as I'm sure it's from abroad.

Yes I've seen that and others but i've never had an account with them and my name is not Gary Cooper so what can I dodunno.gif

On the other hand someone on there has recently posted this -

JUST SPOKEN TO A LOVELY WELSH LADY FROM LLOYDS TSB. THIS NUMBER IS FALSE! NOT FROM LLOYDS TSB.... LLOYDS TSB HAVE NO IDEA WHO THIS NUMBER IS FROM.... AND NOT TO GIVE ANY DETAILS OUT, AT ALL....

If the this is true you'd think they'd want to do something about protecting their reputation.

Getting these kinda calls all the time asking for an Andrew Ball or something like that... Some debt collectors, i keep telling them to stop calling me and delete me from there database but it never happens!

I had exactly the same for about 1 year and then thankfully they just stopped. The phone would ring at random times during the day ,sometimes 3 or 4 times and they would ask for a Mr Miller.

I like you davie tried every tact - politeness, rudeness, aggressiveness, calmness, pullyourhairoutness but to no avail. It really is annoying, but I did get a cheap BT portable phone from the supermarket with caller ID and I noticed that it displayed "international" when they rang, so | could start to ignore them and it then stopped after a while.
