CountesthorpeFox Posted 14 October 2011 Posted 14 October 2011 A host of clubs are considering a move for Mansfield Town ace Luke O'Neill, skysports.com understands. 20-year-old O'Neill came through the youth ranks at Leicester and made his league debut for The Foxes late in 2009. He left big-spending Leicester last summer after sinking down the pecking order and joined Mansfield. But it has taken little time for O'Neill, who has been capped by England at youth level, to make an immediate impact. The attacking full-back has scored three goals in just 14 games, and now a number of clubs are tracking his progress. The likes of Coventry, Doncaster, Derby, Huddersfield and Notts County are amongst the clubs keeping close tabs on him. O'Neill signed a one-year deal with The Stags when he joined in the summer. . http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11688_7241283,00.html Come to regret it? Hope not.
Rustyfox Posted 14 October 2011 Posted 14 October 2011 i think this highlights how young players will have to make their name nowadays. Football has become a industry where results are demanded now, and less and less managers (at the higher levels) are willing to gamble on young, up & coming players. Therefore. young players have to drop down a few levels to get regular football. I think Leic have a good academy but the chances of them making the first team will be slim... especially whilst we're throwing at getting to the Prem asap. The ideal scenario would be to have a feeder club that played these lads on a regular basis then came back to us after a few yrs experience... but i doubt that would ever happen

StanSP Posted 14 October 2011 Posted 14 October 2011 When he gets ahead of Lee Peltier, either for club or country (latter very unlikely, I know), then we should regret it. Right now, though, look at those clubs. None of the clubs mentioned will get to where we want to be quicker than us. Derby were on course, but look at the huge bollocking we gave them .
CountesthorpeFox Posted 14 October 2011 Author Posted 14 October 2011 If he was being linked with ManU of Arsenal maybe, not Huddersfield or Notts County. I accept what youre saying. Well my point was more that if he steps up to one of these clubs and continues to progress then a premiership club might come calling . . . but hopefully by then we'll have said a long goodbye to the championship. Would annoy me if one of our graduates was to go and make a name for himself at cov or derby though.
Guest Col city fan Posted 15 October 2011 Posted 15 October 2011 I'm not surprised Luke is improving.. There was always potential in the young lad. Ash Chambers is doing well at York too...
foxoffderby Posted 15 October 2011 Posted 15 October 2011 Doesn't surprise me saw him play a few times in pre season friendlies over the yearsalways impressed me tough tackling full back reminded me of Gary Neville. I think he played once for the first team but was not very good. He never got a second chance. Hes got all the attributes to make a decent Championship footballer.
General Smuts Posted 15 October 2011 Posted 15 October 2011 But it has taken little time for O'Neill, who has been capped by England at youth level, to make an immediate impact. Atrocious reporting.
