Leicester City 2011/12 – All talk

Posted on 11/03/2012

The following text is sourced from the Leicester Mercury.

National bookmakers have slashed their odds against Sven-Goran Eriksson’s squad making it to the top flight and Leicester firm Mark Jarvis say they have been “swamped” with bets.

With many national chains, City are now 4-1 clear favourites to win the Championship title.

City are not making any official comment about Eriksson’s departure, but the Mercury understands the owners took a thorough look at his record since he took charge over a year ago before sacking him.

“Consistency has been one of our issues this season so the emphasis this week is on getting our performance right first and foremost.

“We’ve got to get our own performance such that other teams don’t enjoy playing against us and fear us.

To do that we have to be at our maximum with more consistency.” – Nigel Pearson

Promotion has always been the primary aim for City and, had they been challenging in the top two, today’s third-round tie could have been seen as a low priority for manager Nigel Pearson.

But the Welsh international midfielder believes the FA Cup has taken on added importance because it is an opportunity for them to discover some consistency and momentum going into the second half of the season.

“This definitely could kick-start our season,” said King.

“I know exactly what the problems are at this football club and I will be addressing them.

“I have a job to do and I am very happy to have the job. I am not happy with the result or the performance, but I recognise where we are, we have to put it right and I will put it right.” – Nigel Pearson

“If we can put together some sort of run between now and the end of the season, as we are 30 games in now, there are still an awful lot of points to play for so who knows what can happen,” said Pearson.

“We have to go out and do it. I am still very confident we have more to come.

“I am pleased with the chemistry within the squad because that is always key. But we have to go out and do it on the pitch.”

“I think we have to believe it is still possible,” said St Ledger.

“We could get that gap back in a Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday week. Then March is a very big month, the games come thick and fast and we have to believe right up until it is mathematically impossible. We are capable of doing what Reading did with the squad we have got. We just have to believe and eradicate the mistakes we are making.”

Monday, March 05, 2012

He [Pearson] said: “In the last 10 games we have had seven wins, so it is not as if we have been playing badly.

“But, when you look at the league form over a calendar year, to not have recorded back-to-back wins is the obvious reason why we are in the position we are.

“But we have given ourselves a chance and, although we are seven points off the play-off places, the players are very confident. We have played some pretty good football as well.

“There are plenty of games left and the onus is still on us. It has to be a very positive run and the margin for error is very small, but there is still a chance.”

Thursday, March 08, 2012

“It is not over,” said the City defender [sean St. Ledger]. “Why would it be?

“There are 12 games left, 36 points to play for. We go out to try to win every game, and if we go on another run together and try to kick on then who knows?

“People will write us off against Reading. It is still a possibility because we can take points off Reading, West Ham, Hull and Birmingham, so anything is possible and we won’t be giving up the fight yet.

I wonder if it is still possible to win the league. You know, go on one of those fantastic runs we are so experienced at doing!

There's still hope for this season, but while the players and staff will still try and aim for the play-offs, and I don't see a reason why they should stop - you have to have ambition (!), the foundations for next season have to start being put in place.

I doubt that any Leicester/football fan with half a brain cell, would have had money on us getting in the top 2.....

I would agree, I still slap my stupid brother around the head when he has us in his accumulators! This season brizzle, Watford, West Ham etc I blame his stupid betting for jinxing us this season. I'd never bet on Leicester to win a game I dont know why I'm not pessimistic in any way but I just feel its a pointless exercise. If we win I'm happy enough with the win and don't need the money anti make me happier and when we lose the thought of losing a big amount on Leicester would just annoy me further.

Based on the 10-season average of around 75pts to finish in 2nd, we can only afford to drop 6pts in the remaining games, so that would be a truely remarkable run to even finish there!

I agree that this season has generally been one of saying the right things without a upwards trend in results, but from what I've seen (1st time ST holder, been to all the home games apart from Brighton and Cardiff) the team has definitely gelled much more as a consequence of actually have games together. Despite our inconsistency, the team performance is TOTALLY different to the one I saw back in August play Reading and Bristol, this was a team that was absolutely STATIC on the pitch with no drive and devoid of a sense of being a cohesive unit. At least now they seem to have a better understanding of each-other and we are showing a willingness to 'knock on the door' with pressure and chances, even if we aren't taking all of them. Plus individual performances have improved (Beckford as the main example of this).

In short - yes a disappointing season, but we should stay strong, stick with the gaffer, give him an actual pre-season with a squad that will just be tweaked and not changed wholesale, and I reckon it will be much brighter in 2012/13!

I think the majority of people did bet on us being in the top 2

Oh, I'd rather it was;

August 19th; Sven believes Leicester were unlucky to lose to Bristol City, "they are simply a better side than us whilst they have Maynard."

October 24th; Top; "I'm sacking Sven because we've had a disagreement, it's a shame though as we're doing pretty well in the league."

December 19th; Nigel Pearson "After reading Foxestalk following our loss to Doncaster, I can confirm, the season is over."

January 30th; Nigel Pearson "Oooh, Norwich away, we're definitely heading out the cup then, now we've got nothing to look forward to whilst we continue our inconsistency."

March 11th; Nigel Pearson "So glad this season is over, the play-offs were never on the cards after Sven's start."

Don't you?
