Guest MattP Posted 18 September 2012 Posted 18 September 2012 Why would we want Di Canio anyway? The guy has done nothing at Swindon yet. Tough crowd. Promotion, a Cup Final losing only to a team in a higher division and knocking a Premier League team out the FA Cup in his first season?
Leicester_Loyal Posted 18 September 2012 Posted 18 September 2012 Why would we want Di Canio anyway? The guy has done nothing at Swindon yet. Hypothetical. Although as Matt states, he did enough in his first season with Swindon. And they were unlucky not to get a goal or two against us, especially as Konchesky should have been sent off.
Finnegan Posted 18 September 2012 Author Posted 18 September 2012 "Flagship City for Multiculturalism" - that's a new one on me! Didn't think it was stupid at all, you would be boycotting something you love on someones political views, I find that in a liberal society quite bizarre. Lets not get all defensive of fascism here, we're not talking about trying to force out a person from their job because they believe in capital punishment or think welfare in this country should be less generous. You're talking about the hypothetical event of Leicester City, a modern, multicultural company, appointing as it's public face a man who openly supports an ideology that believes in ethnic superiority and cleansing and the re-establishment of imperial Rome. You think, under that eventuality, my choice to not give that company my money makes me some hypocritical fascist? Are you actually high?
ADK Posted 18 September 2012 Posted 18 September 2012 Is there any actual evidence that Di Canio holds those views?

You think, under that eventuality, my choice to not give that company my money makes me some hypocritical fascist? Are you actually high? That's the problem, stuff like this always gets so completely exaggerated it ends up going beyond any sensible conversation. Do you really think Di Canio believes those sort of things? If he did he certainly wouldn't have made some of the signings he has at Swindon Town, trust me if he is ever appointed Leicester manager I very much doubt it will end up in a rise of fascism in Leicester and gas chambers being built on the Melton Road. He has said he has fascist ideals, I'm sure loads of people do, I'm sure some of my politics fall into that category. The last Labour cabinet under Blair had a few that had been in various communist groups at university etc in their early years, I doubt it meant they all serious wanted a Stalin like rule over Britain and the death of millions of people.
Finnegan Posted 18 September 2012 Author Posted 18 September 2012 Where did I suggest Di Canio being our manager would put us in danger of becoming the National Social State of Leicester? I'm not suggesting he'd bring the dawn of the new Empire, I'm just saying I disagree with his views enough to not want any association to them. It takes a certain character to stand in front of tens of thousands of gathered people, plus the world's media, and repeatedly give fascist salutes. That's not the act of a man with a few, mild, right wing tendencies.
Guest Bilo Posted 18 September 2012 Posted 18 September 2012 Raises an interesting question - where do you draw the line regarding supporting the club in light of a manager's background, views, etc? At what point do people think there are more important things in life to stand up against compared to blindly following a football team? Not saying I agree or disagree with Finnegan, just wondering how much people are willing to overlook, and that could be regarding the manager, the owners, players, etc. An interesting question indeed James. I, for example, would find it difficult to condemn any feminist who boycotted the club if we were to sign Marlon King for example. As someone of the left, I would find it very difficult to sing Di Canio's name if he were ever appointed manager here. My personal morals and beliefs are more important than my football team at the end of the day, and the kind of morals and beliefs Di Canio stands for as an unashamed fascist are absolutely abhorrent. It's not like he's a misguided old dinosaur like Ron Atkinson, the man still believes that fascism is a valid political movement even with the blood of six million Jews, Poles, Communists, gypsies and other minorities on its hands. I don't care about the fact that Leicester fans wouldn't suddenly start voting for the NF if Di Canio pitched up, he'd be an ambassador for our club and our city. With Leicester being one of the best examples of multiculturalism in Britain (no BNP councillors or race riots in our city thank you very much) the bloke would be a disaster.
