So he ran on to the field of play attacked a player and escaped back in to the crowd. Boat race protestor jumped into the Thames hurts no one and got 6months. Captain... Posted 22 October 2012 Posted 22 October 2012 The boat race protester was an attention seeker, and his motivation was clear and calculated, the Leeds thug acted on impulse and on the spur of the moment, I don't know if that makes any difference, but pushing someone over, it wasn't really a punch, is not the greatest crime in the world, even if it is a millionaire footballer.
Craig Posted 22 October 2012 Posted 22 October 2012 Both got the maximum that they could have got. The Leeds fan pleaded guilty at his first opportunity in which case he was entitled to 1/3 'credit' off of his sentence. So instead of getting the full six months imprisonment he got four. The boat-race protester was jailed after trial, entitled to no 'credit' and got 6 months imprisonment.
Leicfox Posted 23 October 2012 Posted 23 October 2012 Not really. I think the difference is that the race was being televised and had to be restarted, from what I'm aware. The match was also being televised and had to be stopped.
Guest Posted 23 October 2012 Posted 23 October 2012 Try reading the sentencing remarks made by the Judge. You can find them very easily by using Google.
David Guiza Posted 23 October 2012 Posted 23 October 2012 The difference is quite obvious, one is a public neucense offence, and the other assault. Yes 4months is a very small sentence, but if a person was jailed for a number of years every time they lashed out then prisons would be more overcrowded than they already are. As the above post said, the obita dictum says a lot about the reasoning behind the decision.
