We Need to Score First!

Recommended Posts

First post, but noticed interesting fact about our season:

35 League games played with 3 goalless draws out of the other games the season is as follows:-

We have scored first 18 times,Won 15 Drew 2 Lost 1 (the only defeat coming at Peterborough)

We have conceded the first goal 14 times - Won 2 Drew 2 Lost 10 ( The only 2 times we have come from behind to win were at Home to Burnley and Away to Middlesborough).

Not sure what the answer is, put poses question marks about the teams mental toughness?

Can't believe we've only lost once from a winning position!

Shows that there are a lot of inexperienced players out there, their heads seem to drop if we go behind and we don't seem to have the mental toughness to fight our way back into games. (The much talked about lack of plan B)

Having said that, the players did manage to rally in the last 5 mins last night and got the goal, so hopefully this can spur them on a bit and instill a bit of a 'we can do this' attitude...

We'll see by the end of April!

Goals win matches nothing else. You can all the possession in the world but if you don't stick your chances away you'll win nowt.

Interesting also to note that our "not won" games are greater than those we have won. Is that promotion form?

I hear folk saying we'll look back on the point retrieved against Leeds as being important, of course, which it is but I prefer to look at those we have thrown away such as: not winning at Peterborough, 2 lost at Blackpool, 3 lost at Ipswich and 2 thrown away against Barnsley at home. These are all sides who are going nowhere and if it is our serious intention to get promoted these lowly placed teams have to be beaten.

I'd like to see those split by home and away if anyone has the time?

Were you waiting for last nights result before you could say that? Won 17, not won 18. Jesus.

And to answer you question, it can be... Blackpool 2010, Burnley 2009, Hull 2008 are just a few recent examples.

Breakdown is as Follows:-

Home - 13 Times scored 1st Won 11 Drew 2 Lost 0 - 5 times conceded first goal Won 1 Drew 1 Lost 3

Away - 5 times we have scored 1st Won 4 Drew 0 Lost 1 - 9 Times we have conceded the first goal Won 1 Drew 1 Lost 7

All 3 Nil-Nil draws have been away from home.

In summary only twice have we gone on to win a game after conceding the first goal, and only once have we lost a game when scoring first (League games only)

In League points terms we have taken 47 out of 54 when score first (35 out of 39 at home and 12 out of 15 away)

When we have conceded the first goal we have taken 8 out of 42 points ( 4 out of 15 at home and 4 out of 27 away)

We seem to lack real confidence when we concede first.

First goal is vital, we score it and we can go on score 2/3, otherwise we never look like going on to win a game. Not sure what can be done about it though

Given the pic in your avatar, the answers right in front of you... Don't panic! ;)

That goes for the players, staff and, most importantly given the reactions this morning, the fans.
