Heres some facts I pilfered from the 'This Is Leicestershire' website:-

Discovery of genetic profiling by Sir Alec Jeffreys, at the University of Leicester, in 1984.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leicester is the home of Walkers crisps.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The home of the humble pork pie is Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, approximately 15 miles from Leicester.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We're also the location of choice for Next headquarters, in Enderby.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The popular 1970s code-cracking game Mastermind, is manufactured by Invicta, based in Oadby, Leicester. University of Leicester student Cecilia Fung appeared on the famous box, alongside Leicester hairdresser Bill Woodward.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Along Leicester's famed Golden Mile and throughout the city itself, there are literally several hundred Indian restaurants to choose from. The oldest of these is the Taj Mahal, in Highfield Street, off London Road.

I think it used to be but like a lot of things production has now moved abroad. Invicta also used to manufacture a lot of the car red noses for comic relief but haven't really seen many of those in recent years...

My brother who's really into history had this book that had different names for people from different places in England throughout history. Apparently people from Leicester were known as Beanies because we lived on a stable diet of mostly beans?! :S I'll have to check up on that actually.

Wasn't Leicester the first place to have traffic lights or parking meters or something?

Not true, they were just rumours, his bones have remained in teh Royal London Hospital since his death.

"Despite 1980s rumors, pop star Michael Jackson did not buy the Elephant Man's bones"

"...and CT scans of Merrick's skeleton (kept at the Royal London Hospital since his death)."

Alex, i dont understand the proof of your links.

Im now torn between wacko being himself and owning such things, and the likelyhood that your right.

occams razor: the simplest explanation, tends to be the correct one.

I`ll leave it upto you guys which ones ```seems``` to be the most likely.

Well, the link I entitled "Despite 1980s rumors, pop star Michael Jackson did not buy the Elephant Man's bones" says in it "Despite 1980s rumors, pop star Michael Jackson did not buy the Elephant Man's bones" if you read the article.

The second one also follows a similar pattern.

Ok.

Wikipedia says his bones are in the hospital.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_London_Hospital

Answers.com says Jacko didn't buy the bones.

http://www.answers.com/topic/joseph-merrick

Absolute Astronomy says his bones are kept in the hospital.

http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/encyclope...on_Hospital.htm

Rotten.com (not exactly the most reliable, I know) says his bones are in the hospital.

http://www.rotten.com/library/sideshow/elephant-man/

NationMaster.com says his bones are at the hospital, most noteably "Merrick's preserved skeleton is on permanent display at the Royal London Hospital. Singer Michael Jackson is reported to have attempted to purchase it for his private collection in 1985 but was refused."

http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Joseph-Merrick

That proof enough?
