Depends. Some Sikhs say it is, some don't. Depends which viewpoint you have.

According to the highest authority of Sikhs - Akal Takht's rehit maryada, jatka meat is allowed.  I agree there are different view points, but many abstain, and meat is not served in langar as langar is universal for all faiths!!

Actually when halal/kosher meat is slaughtered they cut the jugular therefore oxygen fails to reach the brain very quickly which in turn doesn't allow the animal to feels sensations of pain, so it is a very quick and 'painless' way of slaughtering an animal

If done properly, which it most often isn't as it requires an awful lot of skill to do it properly.

There has been research into the suffering caused to animals due to the way they are slaughtered.  Stunning an animal first, as is the practice in the west, is the most humane and causes the least suffering.  If done well, ritual slaughter can be as fast and painless.  The problem is, it often isn't done well.

But before those of us from a Western culture get too comfortable munching our burgers guilt free, slaughter is very often done very badly here too.  Intensive farming has caused many ills to the animals before they reach the slaughterhouse and often, time demands mean the slaughter is done badly here too.  For instance, pigs are intelligent animals and often know what is in store for them.  They often leave the line and attempt to run away.  The industrial norm is to prevent a pig escaping is by piecing it with a meat hook, either through it's jowell or it's anus, depending upon which way it is facing to escape.  They are then dragged to where they need to be.  This, of course, is without any form of stunning.

There are statistics into the amount of animals slaughtered in Great Britain which are not stunned when they have their throats cut.  I don't have them to hand, but they should make anyone with an ounce of sensitivity a little uncomfortable.

And before any Buddhists decide to get high and mighty about it, animals slaughtered in many Buddhist countries, to kill them without drawing blood, are killed by having compressed air pumped into their stomachs until they explode.

That's got to be bad karma !!
