Phone / bank scam.

Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan has warned Charnwood residents – especially the elderly - about the growing trend in 'courier fraud'.

This is a phone scam where fraudsters use courier firms to help defraud elderly and vulnerable victims of their life savings.

Fraudsters usually phone a victim claiming to be from an authority – usually the police, bank or Serious Fraud Office.

They tell them that their bank account has been compromised and they need to collect their bank card.

In order to reassure the victim that they are genuine, the fraudsters suggest they hang up and ring their bank or the police.

However, they don't disconnect the call so that when the victim dials the bank's real phone number, they are actually still speaking to the fraudster or an accomplice.

They then ask the victim to read out their PIN or type it on the phone keypad, enabling the con-men to know which keys have been pressed.

Finally, they send a taxi or courier round to their victim to collect the bank card.

With this and the PIN they empty the victim's account.

This scam has claimed 2,229 victims, most of whom are elderly.

Mrs Morgan said: "They may sound genuine, but it is a scam and I'd like to warn everyone, particularly the elderly, living locally that if they get a phone call like this, they should not give personal details to strangers.

"Residents who are in any doubt about the caller should just hang up."

After working at a bank, unfortunately this is true.

You should never, ever give anyone your PIN. No-one at the bank would ever ask for this.

People need to wise up.

It would be better if people stopped being thieving cvnts trying to take advantage of the elderly.

Agreed. Makes me sick, people taking advantage of the elderly.

I don't understand how the fraudster's can stay connected even when you hang up to ring the bank

That's how landlines work, if you call someone and don't hang up you remain connected even if they put the phone down, at least that is how the used to work. The call is only disconnected if the person who made the call hangs up. I think this only works landline to landline and not with mobiles.

Well that sounds stooooopid! What about when you don't hear any dialing / ringing tone? Would that not be suspicious :S

Well yeah you would hope they would notice the lack of dialling tone, but then they are preying on the elderly who are probably less likely to notice such things.
