Hitesh Posted 7 June 2013 Posted 7 June 2013 SHOCKER! Owners decide they are planning for the long term... http://nonleague.pitchero.com/news/foxes-appoint-new-manager-22992/? Ilford chairman Roger Chilvers insists the club are planning for the long-term after appointing Martin Haywood as their new manager. The Foxes were relegated from Ryman League Division One North last season after finishing bottom of the table under former boss Kevin Lucas. And Haywood — who has pedigree in youth coaching — has agreed to join Ilford as they prepare for life in the Essex Senior League. But it’s hoped the new manager will help develop the club’s entire structure, as much as seek promotion at the first attempt. Chilvers told the Ilford Recorder: “We are looking to expand the number of teams we have and we were keen to bring in somebody who would look towards the long term. “Of course we’d like to bounce back to the Ryman One North very quickly, but we know that won’t be easy – especially when working with a budget that’s virtually non-existent. “We’ve been talking to Martin for some time about expanding our set-up because he has been successful in working with players up the age of 18. “He is very keen, very enthusiastic and very impressive to talk to. “He’s eager to make the step up and we’re hoping we can cash in on his youth success.†Haywood spent two years at Barking working with the under-18s and under-16s. But it’s anticipated the new boss will have to put together an entirely new team for the next campaign. Chilvers said: “Most teams at this level tend to play for their manager more than the club and when he goes they tend to go as well. “We used nearly 100 players last season and it was difficult because we didn’t have a reserve team. That meant the manager ends up throwing players into the first team to see if they’re good enough or not.†And the sad fact for Ilford was that many clearly weren’t, with the team’s desperately poor record speaking for itself. The Foxes won only four of their forty-two league games and collected a mere twenty points. After kicking off the season with a 2-1 success at Soham Town Rangers in August, they failed to win any of their next twenty-four league and cup games until beating local rivals Redbridge 2-1 at the end of January. Along the way, they lost 7-2 to Witham Town, 6-1 to Needham Market, 6-0 to Heybridge Swifts and 5-0 to Aveley — all at Cricklefield Stadium — and ended up with an embarrassing goal difference of minus 74. And it was inevitable that a change of management would take place this summer as the club looks to undergo an overhaul. “We sat down with Kevin and discussed the situation,†added Chilvers. “But with only four wins and 106 league goals conceded, the writing was on the wall really. “Kevin worked very hard but the players didn’t produce the goods for him.â€
