Webbo Posted 13 March 2014 Posted 13 March 2014 It's part and parcel of being a fan. Hating other clubs is just part of the fun.
Kitchandro Posted 13 March 2014 Posted 13 March 2014 Wow! So arrogance is something to be aspired to now is it?! I wholeheartedly disagree. There is a right way to win and, as I said before, that's with respect, dignity and compassion for your opponent. I don't know if this is going to come as some kind of shock/revelation to you but you can still be passionate whilst still being all of the former. The arrogance of Manchester United fans in the 90s with the whole 'United are better than England' thing endeared them to who exactly? Was interpreted as passion by whom exactly? Gained them the respect from where exactly? So according to you no support has ever been great by being nice. I guess conversely that that would mean that Millwall's support by being nasty is great?! That we don't consider the likes of Manchester City, Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle to have great away support? It's just nonsense. This isn't about being nice, friendly or politically correct. It's about showing sportsmanship, and this is after all a sport. I can guarantee you that the very people who are putting you in a position to display your arrogance are completely against it. This season, Pearson has been the epitome of what we should strive to be as a support: fair, respectful, impressive but also (you guessed it) passionate. The same goes for every one of the players. As for other supports having been the same way when we were woeful, I can't think of many. Maybe Stoke with the way they conducted themselves on the day we were relegated but let's look at some of the reaction towards them when we drew them in the cup.... is that really how we want to be perceived?! It's not about caring what other fans think. It's about being part of a group and being proud of the manner in which that group conducts itself. Were I a Millwall fan I'd hate to consider myself part of the way they carry themselves, but unfortunately as a fan it's not something you have control of, the actions of the vocal minority dictate how the majority is perceived. There is nothing wrong in not wanting to be part of a support considered arrogant and obnoxious, and that's in the eyes of other fans or anybody for that matter. Finally, one point that we can agree on.... "We should be more interested on how we're enjoying ourselves". And that is about doing just that, not ironically cheering every pass of Barnsley's first successful spell of possession or attempt at goal. It's about us after all isn't it?! Millwall aren't arrogant, they're thugs. Totally different. Not sure why you've brought them up at all. Bizarre. I remember Sheff Wednesday fans chanting about us going down in 2008. Newcastle fans have always been arrogant and don't get me started on Mancs. Weren't you at the Man City match this season? Being arrogant in the pub is different to being arrogant in the stands, surely you can realise that? One is being a cvnt the other is just part of being amongst your fans at a match. They are totally different situations And btw, cheering the Barsnley passes was one of the more enjoyable parts of the night, so don't try and suggest that it has nothing to do with our enjoyment.
Kitchandro Posted 13 March 2014 Posted 13 March 2014 Thanks for your input Wordsworth but you seem to have missed the point that showing respect for your opponent when winning has nothing to do with being a 'happy clapper' or prawn sandwiches. But go and make my sandwich for me, if you can manage to work out where the bread goes and where you put the prawns, and I'll be on my way to Brighton or Reading. You seem to miss the point that football fans are not sportsmen, they are normal blokes who want to feel some pride in the club they support. We don't have a duty to respect the opponent.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 13 March 2014 Posted 13 March 2014 The light is beginning to show at the end of the tunnel, chaps.
-blue- Posted 13 March 2014 Posted 13 March 2014 I remember being in pen 3 and watching the West Ham boys climbing over from pen 1 whilst coins, golf balls and even darts were being thrown.... I don't think the word 'arrogance' was banded around much then.......
