Will do mate, although the case panel is awkwardly right at the back of the tower and neither of the side panels can come off. <_<

Try unscrewing them? :dunno: Why would the side panels not come off?

Got some disks to make my PC go back to factory settings (I think)

Stuck them in, turned on the laptop and it noticed they were in there, it did something then went to the packard Bell logo screen, then went back to the black screen where it did the same thing again, then went to the Packard Bell screen and continued doing this back and forth until I turned it off.

Any ideas what I'm meant to do? It's rather annoying, need to sort this out.

Before it restarts do you get a blue screen?

Sorry read it again, black screen

What disks? XP CD?

I think so yeah, I thought it'd automatically boot up itself but I reckon I have to press F2 or F12 (two options on the Packard Bell logo screen)

May be wrong.

PC World are absolute useless tossers.

1. Send laptop off to get fixed because earphone socket isn't working properly.

2. Comes back, with new motherboard put in, but doesn't turn on.

3. We're told we need boot up discs to install everything to factory settings again. Cost: £50

4. Disks come, but disks won't work because obviously the laptop won't turn on in the first place.

5. Send it back to them to fix, AGAIN

6. It comes back, turns on this time at least, strangely everything is still on it (all old photos and programs etc.) We were under the impression everything had been wiped. Anyway disks won't work . Apparently they're the wrong ones.

Ugh.

I swear they've just told us to buy them so they can make a sneaky £50 on the disks and another bomb on phone charges for when we're stuck on what to do.

Apparently there's a Software failure, but everything seems fine to me at the moment. Such a piss take.

Go into the Bios and set the laptop up to boot from disc, then hit any key when it tells you to.

If you'd taken it to a PC shop, it would all have been fixed for £35 where I work :P

Can you guarantee they'd fix my laptop for £35 please?

A brief description would help but they don't charge by the hour; they charge £35 to fix it and if it can't be fixed there's no charge.

Obviously, if you need new parts to fix it then they would cost but £35 is the labour charge.

Well I paid someone £40 to tell me it was the motherboard but that they didn't know what bit :dunno: .

Initially it was just switched on and not being used with the battery being charged. When I came back it was as dead as a dodo. When I plug the charger in the LED on the charger changes from steady to flashing, apart form that there is zilch happening. At the moment it's sitting in it's case with the hard drive removed waiting to be dumped or to be broken up and sold off in bits.

Who are these people you work for and why didn't you speak up earlier when I was asking for advice :P

I work for Badagry Computing. 01530 831705.

Obviously they're the experts and I'm learning all the time but is the voltage on the charger the same as the voltage required? :dunno:

It's a genuine replacement from the suppliers under their warranty and has been working successfully for many months, the lead into the laptop is somewhat frayed but as far as I can tell and been informed by the previous company testing it the charger and all the main components in the lap top are working.

So if I took it in they'd only charge me if they could fix it? What if they can fix it but it's not worth it?

Do you live in Coalville as well then?

They don't rip people off. The owner used to work at a computer shop down the road (yellow sign) and they ripped people off; he wasn't happy so left and started his own business. He's good.

I live in Hugglescote (see 'Location' on profile :P)

You could take it in and just tell them what's wrong with it. If they can fix it but it's not worth it, they'll tell you that. They won't just do it. Ask them to ring you before they do anything on it to tell you what's wrong with it if you want.

They don't charge to have a look at it, but if it obviously won't turn on then if you want them to strip it down to component level to find out exactly what is wrong with it, then that takes time, and I think they charge £15 to diagnose it but that's just what I've known them to do in the past.

No harm in ringing them :dunno:

Thanks - Ok I'll think about it.

Honestly mate the side panels on this are kind of all moulded around, only the panel at the back can be unscrewed. Anyway, I've decided just to give it an external clean for the moment, has stopped doing it over the last few days.

Another question, when you put the windows CD in on boot up so you're basically starting again with everything, does that mean viruses are wiped or do they still stay?

Wiped. Providing you format the hard drive, obviously, because installing Windows over Windows will just keep the viruses. You have to format (wipe clean of all data) the hard drive.

I've got a Toshiba laptop that I've just taken back to how it was new with a recovery disk. according to the spec it has an 80GB Hard drive. It's always been fairly slow with only one 1mb of ram. I've just noticed that the hard drive is split into 2: C drive with 25.8 free of 37.1 GB and an E drive 35.8 free of 35.9 GB. I've never used this E drive but have had to suffer with a nearly full C drive.

Is this an example of a partition?

So can I use that E drive for anything I might have put on the C drive

Can I merge the two and just have one 80GB drive - what are the advantages/disadvantages.

Any thoughts on this are welcomed.

I'm also informed that the RAM is PC5300 compatible DDR11 memory, I have some spare memory from my Philips PC - how can I check whether this will work on the Toshiba?

Cheers.

Most of the time partitions are used to have recovery stuff in them. If you have a recovery dvd though, you wont need it. Is it vista? If so use this website.

Yes it is Vista although I don't know whether it's SP1 or 2. There is a recovery disk but it says in the manual that 'About 1.5GB hidden partition is allocated on the hard disk drive for the System Recovery Options'

This partition is virtually 50/50 - seems a bit excessive :dunno:

By the way I'm posting this using my new desk top PC now running after a few teething problems - thanks for yours and everyone else's input into that.

What did ya get in the end?

TBH I would just delete all the partition into one really as ya have the disk.

I got one from DA Computers pretty much to the spec you suggested, oh and free Dell monitor from my daughter.

If I merge it into one will that 1.5 GB's worth needed for recovery survive?

It won't. Laptop RAM is different to PC RAM in terms of size.
