Scow Posted 23 August 2004 Posted 23 August 2004 GK: Logan - 6 Didn't have a chance with the 3 conceded. Collected crosses well, and his ditribution was generally sound. RB: Powell - 7 Looked solid at right back and got forward well. His crossing was a bit wayward though, but he had a good long throw which set up Wesolowski for the third goal. CB: Smedley - 7 Good in the air and on the ball - Formed a good partnership with Stearman. CB: Stearman - 7 Not as impressive as when he played against East bengal. Was at fault for the first goal when he attempted to chest the ball to another player outside his 18 yard box, which was picked up by a Norwich player who was able to get clear on goal - Player was fouled, and the subsequent penalty was put away. He looked very comfortable on the ball and his distribution was good. Struggled against a powerful Norwich striker who outmuscled him at times - Still needs to develop in this area, but he's only 16 so he has plenty of time for that. He tended to make runs from defence to join in the midfield/attack when he could in open play, which was encouraging to see. LB: Sheehan - 7 Similar to Powell in so far as solid at the back and decent going forward. RW: Pearmain - 5 Not particularly impressive. Didn't get past his man once and deliver a telling cross. When he had the ball, he demonstrated a good touch, but didn't really know what to do with it and took too long in his decision making, which would often mean him being disposessed, or giving the ball away cheaply. Struggled to track back and defend at times, and seemed uninterested without the ball. Strikes me as a cocky player in the mould of Jordan Stewart, but without the ability to justify this stance. CM: Dawson - 9* Man of the match by far. Was a strong influence in the centre of midfield with his limitless energy and drive. Looked excellent on the ball, and his distribution was excellent. Got forward well throughout the game, and was unlucky not to score with a 25 yard effort in the first half which flew just wide. Set up Wright's second goal when he crossed with his weaker left foot, which was headed across goal by Pacquette and tapped in by Wright from about 2 yards out. Hopefully will get a chance this season. Petrescu (poster) was right about comparing him to Roy Keane, he seems to have all those attributes. CM: Butcher - 7 Showed some neat touches in midfield and looked composed on the ball. He was more of the holding midfield player allowing Dawson to burst forward from midfield. Didn't really have the aggressive battling qualities of Dawson, and pulled out of a few tackles. McGavigan - 5 Read Pearmain, except for the cockiness. A left winger who couldn't get past anyone or deliver a decent cross. FW: Wright - 6 Stunning first goal. Cut in from the right hand side and unleashed a rocket of a shot from 20 yards out on his left foot in to the top corner. Second goal was a tap in from a ball headed across goal by Pacquette. Didn't really impress me though apart from the goals. He struggled to hold up the ball as a lack of strength and phsyique meant he was pushed off far too easily. Distribution and link up play was generally poor. However, he was very committed and vocal in captaining the team. Doesn't seem first team material at the minute, although a better option than Blake. FW: Pacquette - 5 Forget about signing him. Kept giving the ball away, and didn't make an impression. Set up Wright's second goal, but that was about it. SUBS: FW: O'Grady - 5 Showed a bit of pace and skill, but was largely anonymous. LW: Wesolowski - 8 Scored the third goal with a well taken finish. Controlled a long throw in on his chest, and from about 12 yards out, volleyed it first time in to the corner of the net. Looked lively down the left and showed plenty of pace and skill. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall, it was good to see some of these promising players in action. They coped extremely well with an experienced Norwich reserve side. It didn't look too promising when they fell a goal behind after just two minutes, but the team battled back well with Dawson proving a massive influence from midfield. Here are a few pics, not very good, mind: Picture 1 Picture 2
Mad Dog Posted 24 August 2004 Posted 24 August 2004 From what I've seen in the pre-season friendlies this year and the few youth & reserve games I've watched it's clear that Dawson will be making the step up to first team probably before anyone else in that squad. Wright's had a full pre-season and still doesn't look much good even in the reserves, so those calling for him to be in the first team sit down please. Plus the fact Stearman couldn't handle Norwich's reserve strikers, yet you want him in the first team squad
Ric Flair Posted 24 August 2004 Posted 24 August 2004 Mad Dog you annoy the shit out of me, sorry but you do. Basically a youngster has got to do nothing wrong for you to accept that he might have talent, yet certain players in the first team don't get this opinion from you. The fact that Nikos Dabizas is a greek international footballer and still i've not seen him once have a comfortable game at the back, he struggles to shrug off attackers and if I was the ref he would concede 3 or 4 penalties a game, he's shit. Stearman has had a remarkable pre-season and by the sounds of it, didn't have the most impressive of games yet you jump at the chance to slag him off because he apparently didn't manage to snuff the Norwich attackers out (one of them who scored past Man Utd on saturday) Hmmm right ho mate. As for Wright, if he continues to score goals at ease I can't see how Adams can ignore him. Whether scoring goals is all he does, can you really prevent him from being given a chance when you have players like Benjamin and Blake who can't score frequently either and most certainly don't offer anything else. You have your opinion and fair enough, but you obviously have a problem with younger players coming through and i'd love to know the nature of this gripe you have with them. I'm not saying any of them are ready for first team football, but nobody really knows until they are given a chance similar to nobody knowing if a soldier is ready for war. Sometimes Adams needs to take a gamble because his so called 'experienced' players often seem as much of a gamble as trying out some of our academy lads when they produce and inept display like the last 2 games.
Mark Posted 24 August 2004 Posted 24 August 2004 Norwich: Gallacher, O Brennan, J Brennan, Mulryne (Howell 68), Mackay, Shackell, Henderson, Crow (Abbey 63), Jarvis, Safri (Halliday 63), Smith. Subs unused: Lewis, Blackburn. Just thought i'd add, 8 out of the starting 11 for Norwich all have first team experience. Compare that to ours. They deserve more credit for last nights performance.
Ash Posted 24 August 2004 Posted 24 August 2004 Hopefully Stearman will develop into a great player , he seems a very good player for his age! All he needs is to gain experience & strength !
