He's had surgery because it was probably the easiest way to ensure he wouldn't have issues further down the road, perhaps even a quicker recovery time. I'm no medical expert, but I do hope you weren't being serious, otherwise you'll come across as a 'bit of a moron'. It was a flippant remark, and hardly serious.
