This is my thinking: surely, no one KNOWS for sure that you are going to kill the flies until the dying actually takes place?

You may HOPE that you are going to be able to kill them, but even you don't know for sure (you may miss, not hit hard enough etc), at least until you realise that you have hit them hard enough...

If you want to kill a fly, move your finger really slowly towards them and just gently squash them underneath.

The reason they fly away is because they feel the wind from you sqinging your hand before you hit them.

That's what I heard anyway and it worked when we tried it.

The way to do it, is clap above it, the fly gets caught in the draft from the hands moving and then succesfully gets squished in your palms.
