Trav Le Bleu Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Gretna Administrators axe ALL staff It's very sad to see this happen, especially when you consider they were Scottish Cup Finalists 2 seasons ago. Scary to think this could have happened to City
LeeCovFox Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Gretna were playing in the English Unibond League not so many years ago. They were lucky enough to be bankrolled by a wealthy benefactor, and found themselves in a cup final, Europe, and playing against the Old Firm in league matches. I agree that it is sad for those who have been made redundant. But the fans? They lived the dream they never believed could come true. And at the end of it, they got their football club back. It could be worse for them.

Daggers Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Poor Gretna - just shows what happens when a man controlled by ego is removed from the footballing equation. It won't be the last club this happens to, football is a house of cards waiting to be toppled.
Webbo Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Didn't someone on here say once that Gretna itself was about the same size as Mountsorrel? It's hardly surprising that they couldn't sustain their high standing. It's a shame when people lose their jobs but without all that injection of funds those jobs wouldn't have existed in the first place. Gretna will come back in one form or another and all the fans will have something to remember. Such is life.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 19 May 2008 Author Posted 19 May 2008 Didn't someone on here say once that Gretna itself was about the same size as Mountsorrel? Aye it is, driving between Carlisle and Glasgow, blink and you'll miss it. But what you need to realise is that Outside of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen all the other towns/cities in Scotland are one man and a duck thrupenny-ha'penny type places. Even Inverness and Perth are no bigger than Loughborough. Callie Thistle's new ground is quite nice, but ten years a go they were playing in a ground not disimilar to the Marston.
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Pretty sad to see this happen. With all of their promotions it was the talk that they would become a new powerhouse in the SPL, much like Inverness became many years ago.
Raj Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Feel really sorry for those who got made redundant. This is the face of football the likes of dimwitted Ashley Cole and Co will never comprehend as the biggest headache they will have is which new Bentley Turbo to buy or which bimbo to fook next. Its the average working class folk who suffer. Like daggers say, this wont be the last club that goes down. (No offence to Ashley Cole...if he's reading...but you are a fcuking **** Ashley...if you are reading this...you knob jockey!)
Fox You Forest Posted 19 May 2008 Posted 19 May 2008 Just out of intrest who pays the Administrators?
Ultra Posted 20 May 2008 Posted 20 May 2008 Just out of intrest who pays the Administrators? I think their fees are covered by whoever takes the club on (unless an insolvency expert can advise otherwise...) There could be an offer this week. However, the new owners will have to recruit an entirely new staff over the summer, and convince the SFL that the club will be able to see out next season.
