I've started watching a lot of reruns of quiz shows with my girlfriend just because it's quite a relaxing, mindless way to spend an evening. And they really are great snapshots of British culture and society at the time of broadcasting. Above all the weakest link, which is the first thing I'd show someone if they wanted to understand this country in the 2000s and early 2010s. Anne Robinson making jokes about gypsies, asking a contestant from Liverpool if he stole a car to come to the studio, comments about female contestants' boobs. Genuinely feels more dated than Bullseye, like a clip of Joey Barton on Newsnight. Such a weird period in British history.

I feel like left wingdom in England is more of a vibe now, doesn't seem to really exist here in the same way as in Europe. Perhaps down to us moving closer culturally to America.
-
The focus on the boat stuff is a bit weird but I'm guessing some of it is cognitive dissonance from people who voted for the government that increased legal immigration to its highest level ever.
-
Yeah I thought someone was going to reply with like "urgh sounds disgustingly centrist". It's more left wing than most in England and certainly more left wing than a lot of the old working class areas that seem to be embracing ****ing Farage

There is still a large Guardian-reading liberal bourgeoisie out in the shires I find. My parents for example, who go to film club every week with other retirees who like Emma Thompson and Gary Lineker and hate Boris Johnson.

All these people getting banned from gen chat I feel a bit left out. Clearly my takes are quite banal and not as scorching hot as I like to think.
-
Farage and Robinson both appeal to people that think the there is an urban liberal elite who are laughing at them. It's a kind of politics as revenge fantasy, a bit like communism. Beyond that I'm not sure there's much coherence behind their appeal.

Went for Zagreb but looking at the photo again the building in the background is pretty famous, I should've picked up on it.

Idea for a thread - things that 'Russell Martin' sounds like it could be the name of: a) toasters b) a production company of classy pornography for him and her c) a line of clothing favoured by late teenage boys making their first court appearance

I'm traumatised from late nights marking papers from students who haven't attended a single class or sent me a draft assignment but somehow manage to pump out a 3000 word essay with 25 sources perfectly cited. So anything I read now with numbered subheadings and a load of compound nouns makes me break out in a cold sweat.

Don't know if the - is a telltale sign but the post looks very AI to me.
