  1. From an outsider looking in I really have no reason to go to leicester other than football.

Sad fact is that every city these days is the same, the same chain shops, selling the same stuff. The same chain restaurants selling the same food. it's just other city's seem to do it better.

Also the high cross has to many shops in one single location, unless they can pursuade one or two of the bigger shops to relocate to try and attract people to different areas of the city centre everywhere else will continue to struggle

  2. Thanks mate, looking to pick up a few Marvin Gaye records, and D'Angelos first 2. Where would be best to get them?

Marvin will be easy you would probably be able to pick up lets get it on and what's going on in HMV leicester D'Angelo would be much tougher I reckon, doubt they would have been reissued and you would be looking at some extremely expensive second hand copies.

  3. What are the best stores in and around leicester for vinyl records? And the best online stores too?

Nottingham has a couple of great shops the music exchange is a fantastic little place, rough trade have just opened a big shop just around the corner.

    Online places I use

    Rough trade

    Banquet records

    Picadilly records

    Phonica records

    The music exchange

    Bleep

Always try the labels themselves eg ninja tune

Or for me as a last resort Amazon

  4. Todays Vinyl Purchases:

Hookworms - The Hum Indy only clear vinyl with bonus 7"

    Soulside - Trigger Dischord Reissue

Slant 6- Soda Pop Rip Off Dischord Reissue

Tom Waits - Bad as Me

    Tom Waits - Blood Money

The Music exchange in Nottingham is a cracking little shop in more ways than one, a special place

  5. Picked up Springsteen's debut album, 30+ years old but plays better than some new vinyl.

got most of the old springsteen stuff on vinyl, now just need to shell out £160 for the remastered boxset coming out next month!

Can't wait till rough trade Notingham opens shortly, however with it being almost next to The Music exchange I hope they can survive because they are an excellent shop.

my nicest recent purchase is the Sun Kil Moon album Benji on clear vinyl, one of my favourite albums this year.

  6. Did either of you see Royal Blood supporting? Saw them a few weeks ago and thought they were incredible. I'm more excited to see them again at leeds fest rather than Arctics! I think their signed to Matt Helders label, closest thing to muse...since muse

Seen royal blood twice but I really don't get the comparison to muse, I mean muse are more technical and complicated, royal blood are far more simple with riffs straight out of jimmy pages song book.

Muse have guitar solos longer than a royal blood song.

One thing is for sure that they show an awful lot of promise, I just hope they have time to develop and aren't rushed into releasing an album to soon, they are signed to Warner bros by the way.

  7. Anyone ever been KOKO? How would you compare it to Shepherd's Bush Empire or Hammersmith Apollo if you've been?

Seeing Kids in Glass Houses at KOKO for their Farewell Tour in October. Bought tickets this morning.

Koko is an amazing venue, the decor is ace as lamby said. word or warning though if you are downstairs near the front it takes ages and I mean ages to get out

  8. Been busy week saw Franz Nicolay on Sunday, Sigur ros who were amazing on Tuesday, Jason isbell once of drive by truckers last night and finishing off with cerebral ballzy and the amazing snakeheads tomorrow night!

Few days off then it's time few mogwai in cambridge

  9. Going to see Low at the Queens Social Club in Sheffield on 16 Nov.  By the looks of the place, might be playing a few games of bingo too?

    0004-WU-LYF-The-Queens-Social-Club-Sheff

Have been there before and it does have more than a whiff of the Phoenix club and you expect brian potter to appear at any moment.

It's very odd and they have the glittery banners you can see behind the stage, you also have to sign in as it's a working mens club.

Saying that the sound was pretty cool

  10. Not sure if it's totally everyones cup of tea but next week in London is open house weekend, loads of places that are normally closed to the public are open and free to all places like the Gherkin, Tower 42, Lloyds of London and Battersea power station including the turbine hall for the last time before it gets mashed up and turned into a shopping centre.

I reckon there will be some amazing photo opportunities so heading down myself

  11. Got myself a new camera this week just messing around, just taken with a 20mm pancake lens to get to know how it works, fairly impressed with quality even I had only just worked out how to turn it on

  12. What do people make of these compact system cameras? Are they actually any good? Was looking at one of the Samsung NX series.

I'm thinking it will give me more control than a point and shoot camera but without some of the complexity of a DSLR, worth the cash or a waste of money?

  13. You always can tell how shit a band is when they overcompensate with stage effects.

BTW I know one of the stage crew who are touring with muse....he gets paid really well and most of the year he's at home doing nowt.

I really would like to go to more giggs but theres only a few I really love enough to see live and I've seen them all at least once, cant get motivated to see a band unless I really love 'em.

Totally agree stadium gigs with over the top special effects Sally aren't for me, I would rather see a band play in a tiny venue but one where you can actually feel like they are performing for you, no special effects, no fancy lighting rigs, just a band playing their songs.

My next gig is deerhoof at the bodega in Nottingham one of my favourite venues, it only holds 250 people give me that any day over a stadium concert
