Getting up at 5.30am on a Saturday morning with a banging headache and cold to go to work, but finding your car frozen, which would take about 15 minutes to defrost by which time there would be no point in going into work (i.e by the time i'd defrosted the car, travelled to work and the time I planned to finished work it was hardly worth it) , so didn't bother going.
Now i've just wasted valuable time getting up early when I could have been in bed for a few extra hours

surely you were planning to stay more than 15minutes though could you not have just been 15 minutes late instead of not going at all?

Ermmm a bit weird actually. My Dad just turned up clutching an envelope containing some info hes just received in the post from a Charity that was in charge of the Childrens home he was in the care of when he was a baby (long story) basically weve never known who his parents were or anything - none of his side of the family at all. He tried to track them down when he was 15 but was told all records were destroyed in the war (blatent lie apparently)
He wrote off to this charity a few months ago just to see and got back a load of info about his Mother, Father (sadly only his first name and occupation) and Grandparents etc and he apparently had 6 Aunts and an Uncle who is barely older than he is.
Addresses were listed and just had a look at the address he was born at (the family home) and its still there, seen a photo on Streetview which for some strange reason made us both cry. Its all a bit surreal but we now have lots of names and addresses and ages and can start tracing his family back and maybe find some surviving relatives.
Its all been such a massive family mystery for so long (my Dads in his 70's) its such a strange feeling knowing just a little bit about his background - theres lots of stuff in there explaining why she gave him up and that no one knew he existed barring his Grandparents.
Anyway the long shot of it is, having thought he was East End born we now know he was born in Ilford which makes me half Essex girl ( not happy about that!!)
Also my Dad has very olivy coloured skin so we always had a bit of a family joke about his Dad being some rich Arab which appears not to be the case unless there was any rich Arabs called Frederick

Going to go to the Central Records office as soon as we can and find out more. Exciting times
Sorry to bore you all, just a big thing for me and mine!
I found out my mum was adopted as a baby a few years ago, seems she was given up for adoption at birth as obviously way back when being a single mother was often frowned upon.
It's strange that you spend 30years and have no idea of your actual roots my mum only told me when my Gran started to go a bit crazy and started mentioning things.
My Mum has never bothered to try and trace her birth parents it must be a difficult thing to do and the longer it's left the harder it must get. I have looked back at my late fathers side and traced it back to about 1800 which is actually pretty interesting stuff but the thought that I have no idea about my mums birth family is very strange. I would like to look into it more and find out my roots but it's not my decision or choice
Good look with what you find.
Oh as for the Frederick thing from watching Who do you think you are many immigrants often took English names as a way of being more accepted into society, Frederick has many different connotations so it doesn't mean anything, could have been changed from a German or Italian version and anglicized see about half way down the page.

Empress Ballroom is where it's at... Stunning. It's where it all started commercially for The Stone Roses, and after years of not having the best crop, all the big names are starting to come back.
Enter Shikari playing there after the Blackpool game. Tickets still available check this thread.

I couldn't be more delighted - my kids adore this film, the girl has been totally immersed.
Tomorrow: Part II and III
Best films ever!!
I like to ensure that I watch all 3 at least once a year, sometimes back to back

My games room.
Full of total crap I've bought over the years, but also full of some of my most valuable music memorabilia, framed movie and band posters, pop art, my jukeboxes, my old game systems, my star wars arcade game (full scale), my music collection, and in the corner a full scale storm trooper. Its full of great stuff and the most tacky stuff you'll ever see, but I love it and quite happy to spend many hours going through it all.
I don't think you could have a better room!! if you had a few guitars in there as well it would almost be perfect!
maybe a new thread "bit's of kitsch and the odd stormtrooper" the contents of Purpleronnies games room

are they the things jason newstead's mum invented, because metallica (the members there of) were going deaf? i seem to remember hearing something about that a few years back. they(the earplugs) had to reduce the volume, but had to maintain the pitch....or something.
that's the idea what damages your hearing is the top and bottom levels of the sound, if you are a proper musician you can have them molded to fit for about £150 these cost about £20 they are brilliant I have had to much gigage over the years and my ears ring anyway and after Spiritualized in June when I really couldn't hear anything for about 5days I thought to my self this really can't be good..
so got these what they do is tone down the distortion and volume slightly by filtering out the levels that damage your hearing and to be honest they actually improve the sound everything is far more clear they are brilliant after the gig you can hear perfectly they actually make it better imo.
I love music and going to gigs and really don't want to get to the point where I have to stop.
these are highly recommended
-
but shitter? <_<
well obviously!!
you know what I mean BIG sound, small venue ears would be ringing for days!!
some of these bad boys would be a must!

f**k off loud concert followed by zero ringing in the ears

next year so far is:
Lostprophets - Rok city
Biffy clyro - De Monfort
Kerrang tour - 02 arena birmingham
30 seconds to mars - trent fm
Pendulum - doncaster
V Festival
Muse - Manchester
that's a pretty varied line up but one thing springs to mind V Festival constantly the most boring of all the festivals the line up is always about as bland as it gets so just out of interest why this one? instead of say Isle of Wight, Download, Reading, T in the Park, Rockness and so on
Pendulum in Doncaster will be mental saw The Cribs at the Dome on Saturday and thought it would insane when The Prodigy play there in January so Pendulum would be similar I would take some earplugs to that one!! nice venue though
-
It was good, but not as much as I thought it would be. Not their fault though, not sure whether it was just a Southern crowd who weren't massively up for it. I'm sure it'll be better up North in Doncaster though.
Very good live band though, seen them twice now.
It was a good night although they didn't actually play for long 75mins no encore, although 4 bands for £15.00 you can't really go wrong although The Slits were on the bill and they were rubbish the singer accusing everyone of being racists and chauvinists because they were booing actually it might be because you were rubbish.
The Cribs were great though a really tight live band, one thing about seeing them ooop north the fact that most of the crowd just shouted Yorkshire... Yorkshire... Yorkshire all the time
-
I am expecting today to be massive Leicester Forest and then back home followed by a quick dash up the A1 to Doncaster to see The Cribs
-
The Cribs at Brixton Academy tonight. Cheeers.
The Cribs at Doncaster Dome Saturday
let me know how it was

What grinds my gears...
