  1. Survive for the first 10-15 overs, thrive after here.
  2. Was going to put this in the Depression thread, but I don't think it really fit there.
  3. It's rather darkly fascinating how some people trust the scientific method with their lives in some cases and won't touch the very same scientific method with a bargepole in others, isn't it? Still, I'm sure it was the same when vaccines for other diseases were introduced in the past. I just hope that lack of logical rationality won't produce results for our species any direr than they already have in the future, though I fear they might. Anyhow, on topic, can't look beyond a Alcaraz-Sinner final here.
  4. ... and the study referenced has (apparently) zero to do with US research participation or benefit, so I'm unsure why it could be used as an example of the US behaving positively towards scientific research and progress in this case.
  5. I've been saying elsewhere that GB are very good at producing individual sportspeople across a variety of sports that are very good at being mediocre nearly-rans. A few like Murray and Hamilton being the exception that proves the rule.
  6. How depressingly Henman-like.
  7. Seems to be more miracle than hope right now.
  8. Logic says Alcaraz in straights or maybe four coming up, but hopefully Norrie can make it closer than that.
  9. I'm not sure exactly what the US NIH would have to do with a Swedish institution working with Chinese patients (particularly when the reason for hanging the above researchers out to dry was stated in relative black and white), but it is good to see that other places are carrying on while the US lags.
  10. And I would bet this is far from the only research establishment where something like this is occurring. The damage being done to scientific progress right now is unconscionable.
  11. Yeah, if Wimbledon are banning Russian players from competing, then they should also be banning US and Israeli ones (and that's just the top of the list) next. It's a dangerous can of worms to open and so it shouldn't be opened.
  12. One can only hope that when those responsible are caught, those same sausages will be the first thing on their dinner menu. Animal abuse purely for the sake of sadism deserves a very hard punishment.
  13. Agreed. But if that (and now) is a model of how our species acts under low-to-not-quite-moderate strain from an act of nature, we'd better get better at it. Rapidly.
  14. Interesting angle. I personally think it magnified a problem that was already there, and the acceleration of social media has additionally magnified it.
  15. It's rather darkly hilarious that such folks appear to buy into every theory about humans affecting the climate except for the most obviously proven one.
  16. Has to be one of those, they certainly have more than enough time on their hands here.
  17. I guess I feel the same way about it as I did Hayden taking the record off Lara against the same opposition as here, and I was glad when Lara got it back. I know you can only rack up a score against what's in front of you, though.
  18. Unpopular opinion: while it'll be great for him if he reaches the record, I hope that it stays with Lara.
  19. If he doesn't fetch up against Alcaraz or Sinner, perhaps. But I think those two now have the skill and longevity to outlast him in a five set match.
  20. Against the fully committed, absolutely. However, it is still necessary to stop them from convincing the uncommitted into their way of thought or simple indecision/apathy, and that requires presence and action.
  21. I think likely Sinner is the only one who can stop him from doing so.
  22. Norrie v Alcaraz in the QF then. Don't expect a shock there tbh, but I just hope Cam gives a good account of himself.
  23. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c15np18yy24t Flash floods costing a lot of lives in Texas. The powers that be offering their usual "thoughts and prayers" while of course dodging the more important matter of understanding why these events happen in the first place and why there wasn't enough advance warning of this one. Because that might make them look rather bad.
  24. Speaking personally I'd rather players like Norrie had a bit more needle if it drove them to win more. Good win, last Brit standing.
