Went for the first time in a while today. I expected it to be half arsed but I couldn’t quite believe it by the end. The most we got out the ground in unison was naff, rent-a-chant songs about Steven Gerrard that were out of date ten years ago. Senseless, robotic clapping of players who haven’t looked like they want to fight for the badge, even once this season. Folk celebrating Barnes scoring against Newcastle was nauseating, performative hogwash, indicative of the fanbase as a whole. Got an array of hard stares and tuts when I joined in anti-board/Rudkin chants.
I think it optimised that long running thing we’ve talked about where most folk just go because it’s routine. I’m trying hard not to be hyperbolic, but I genuinely believe a large majority of the home match going fan base don’t actually have an opinion about what goes on at the club. It’s the equivalent of a desk job.
I looked around today and just thought, it’s dead, isn’t it? Where do you go from here?
A mate asked me why I was so miffed by fans clapping players and it boils down to the total lack of standards at the football club that is so infuriating. Seemingly anything goes at both board and pitch level, and we’ll happily pay to congratulate those in charge for it. Those with the power are NOT serious people, let alone football people.
Fair play to @ozvaldo and again the folks at UFS today.
So, so depressing and it seemingly won’t end. It’s dead, stick a fork in it.
